Stella Elizabeth Atwater Alston





DURHAM -- Mrs. Stella Elizabeth Atwater Alston, 96, of 2900 Fayetteville St., died Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 581 New Hope Church Road, Apex. Family visitation, one hour prior to service. Burial, Williams Family Cemetery.

She was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and the Williams Family Circle. She and her late husband, William Roland Alston Sr., served the Biddle/Semans/Duke Family for many years. She also retired from Belk-Leggett.

Survivors include her devoted son, Joseph L. Alston (Rose Marie); grandchildren, Kimberly R. Alston, Tiffany A. Burwell (Jay), Janelle A. Collins (Todd), William R. Alston III, Michael L. Alston and Vince Chandler; great grandchildren, Leah Alston, Kyra Alston Burwell, Logan Elizabeth Burwell, Sydney Rose Collins and Ella Gabrielle Collins; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Viewing, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Fisher Funeral Parlor.

Patricia Elliott Riley Amaechi





DURHAM -- Patricia Elliott Riley Amaechi passed on Sunday afternoon, November 8, 2009 at UNC Memorial Hospital while awaiting a transplant.

Pat was the co-founder and executive director of Healing with CAARE, Inc., a community based organization serving the underserved population in Durham County for 14 years. Born and raised in Durham, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Estelle Elliott.

Pat is survived by one son, Donald Riley of Raleigh; two brothers, Joe Elliott and Reginald Elliott of Durham; three sisters, Carolyn Hinton of Hillsborough, Addie Mann and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, both of Durham; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; and staff and clients who she loved like family.

A Celebration of Life in Memory of Pat Amaechi is planned for Friday, November 13th from 7 to 9 p.m. The Memorial Service and Repass will be held at CAARE, Inc. 214 Broadway Street, Durham.

The funeral service will be held at Faith Assembly Christian Center, 3120 Fayetteville Street, Durham, on Saturday, November 14th at 1 p.m. followed by the burial at Glennview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Faith Assembly Christian Center on Saturday from 12 to 1 p.m. Flowers are acceptable or the family would appreciate donations to CAARE, Inc., 214 Broadway Street, Durham, NC 27701 in Pat's name.

Vivian Gaynell Harris Cates

DURHAM -- Mrs. Vivian Gaynell Harris Cates, daughter of the late Lucious and Nannie Harris, was born March 10, 1932 in Orange County. She was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 6, 2009 surrounded by her children and grandchildren in Durham.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Harvey C. Cates. She is survived by three daughters, Beverly Cates of Fuquay Varina, Sheila Richardson (Carl), and Debbie Hardy (Michael), all of Durham; three sons, Lee Harris Sr. (Costella), Lucious Cates (Tracey), and Douglas Cates, all of Durham; and one step son, Calvin Lunsford (Stella) of Hillsborough; seven sisters-in-law; 17 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Lipscomb Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Hillsborough, at 1 p.m. with the viewing one hour before services. Arrangements are being handled by Scarborough and Hargett Funeral Home.

Michael Jason Ferrell

DURHAM -- Michael Jason Ferrell, 42, of 3149 Cheek Road, passed away suddenly at his home on Tuesday, November 10, 2009.

Mike was employed by Jacob's Glass Company. He had a love for antiques and shared this hobby with his mother. He was preceded in death by his father, Dan Ferrell; and brother, Donnie Joe. Mike will be missed by his dogs, Peppers and Rusty, who he loved and enjoyed.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Renee Parrott Ferrell; two daughters, Brittaney and Jessica Ferrell; one grandson, Noah, who was the apple of his eye; his mother, Frances Ferrell; sister, Kim Miles and husband, Derrick; and two nieces and one nephew.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Greg Allison. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be David Parrott, Wayne Parrott, Justin Fiedler, John Jones, Troy Jones and Troy Wayne Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be the employees of Jacob's Glass Company.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home of his mother, Frances Ferrell, 3151 Cheek Road. Flowers are acceptable.

Earl Ross Francis

DURHAM -- Mr. Earl Ross Francis, 75, passed away Tuesday morning at his home.

Mr. Francis was born in Durham, the son of the late Oma and Charlie Francis Sr. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Francis retired from the Durham Police Department and the Durham County Sheriff's Department, and was a past commander of the American Legion Post 7. Earl was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Francis Jr., Jim Francis and Linwood Francis; a son in law, Dicky Woodell; and a grandson, Tyler James Woodell.

Mr. Francis is survived by his wife, Betty Harper Francis; two daughters, Debra Woodell of Durham and Lisa Boothe and husband, Ronnie, of Hillsville, Va.; four grandchildren, Ashley Godwin and husband, Chris, of Newport, Buck Finley and Jennifer Finley, both of Hillsville, Va., and Victoria Faith Woodell of Durham; two great grandchildren, Chloe Paige Godwin and Christopher Tyler Godwin; brothers, Gene Francis and wife, Lynda, of Gibsonville, and Daniel Francis of Durham; and his Westie Terrier, Abbey.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Marc Francis officiating. Casket bearers will be Tony Roop, CW Clayton, Tony Rigsbee, Buck Finley, Chris Godwin, Jimmy Lively, and Dan Gray. The family will receive friends at the home. Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to Heartland Hospice Care, 3200 Atlantic Ave., Suite 100, Raleigh, NC 27604.

The family would like to thank Dr. S. David Stanley, Dr. Khwaja and Brandi Rowe, R.N. of Hospice for their dedicated and gentle care which made his passing easier and peaceful.

Edna Irene Gunter





DURHAM -- Mrs. Edna Irene Gunter, 87, resident of Durham, passed away Tuesday, November 10, 2009.

She was born in McDowell Co, W.Va., the daughter of the late William Lambert and the late Mary Adeline Lambert. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Robert Lee Gunter. Because of his time in the Navy, they lived many places and made Durham their home in 1964. She was a faithful and active member of Parkwood Baptist Church and employed by Battelle Memorial Institute since 1983 as a research surveyor.

Surviving are her son, Robert H. Gunter of Durham; daughter, Pamela G. McClure and husband, James W. McClure, of Durham and Sandra K. Gunter of Butner; granddaughter, Amanda R. McClure of Greenville; and grandson, Alexander J. McClure of Durham.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Parkwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Martie Mangum officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Pamela McClure, 109 Stinhurst Dr., Durham.

Irene cared for and touched the lives of her family and friends. She was always loving and giving to others, without thinking of herself. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Duke Homecare & Hospice, 4023 North Roxboro Rd., Durham, NC 27704.

Kenneth Rouse Sr.

DURHAM -- Mr. Kenneth Rouse Sr., 61, 810 N. Duke Street, Durham, died November 7, 2009 at Duke Medical Center.

He was retired Army SFC.

Funeral service will be held at noon Friday, November 13, 2009 at Wiseman Mortuary Chapel in Fayetteville.

Burial will be held at Sandhills Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake. Public viewing will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Wiseman Mortuary.

Survivors include his wife, Georgia Thomas Rouse; son, Kenneth Luther Rouse; daughter, Tiffany Tomeka Rouse; granddaughters, Aphayla Breanna Rouse, Janiyah Kapri Rouse; sisters, Dorcas Ann Rouse, Wendy Denise Rouse and Georgia Rouse Saxton.

Teresa 'Tee' Alfreda Jordan Thornton

DURHAM -- Teresa "Tee" Alfreda Jordan Thornton departed this life on Monday, November 9, 2009 after a brief illness.

Homegoing services will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, November 13, 2009 at Greater St. Paul Baptist Church. Visitation will be prior to the services from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the church.

Zelda C. Tilley

DURHAM -- Mrs. Zelda C. Tilley, 98, resident of Durham passed away Tuesday, November 10, 2009.

She was born in Granville Co., the daughter of the late Josie Cash Cozart and Edwin Cozart. Mrs. Tilley is also preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Burton Tilley; and a son, Harold B. Tilley.

Surviving are two sons, Lacy Tilley of Durham and Charles Howard Tilley and wife, Diane, of Statesville; brother, Wallace Cozart; two grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Maplewood Cemetery with the Rev. Chris Teseniar officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Hilda Laws Bacon

HILLSBOROUGH -- Mrs. Hilda Laws Bacon, 73, died Wednesday at her home.

Mrs. Bacon was born in Orange Co., the daughter of the late Hattie Lue Garrett Laws and the late Rufus Laws. She was a member of the Eastern Star. One of her greatest talents was being able to locate water veins with a dogwood stick. Mrs. Bacon enjoyed watching her favorite baseball team, the Atlanta Braves, and her favorite basketball team, the Carolina Tar Heels. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Henry Bacon.

Mrs. Bacon is survived by daughter, Cannie Lloyd and husband, Bob; son, Thomas Bacon III and wife, Tammy; sister, Evelyn Berry and husband, Mitchell; brothers, Robert Laws and wife, Florence, E.R. 'Nug' Laws and Judy and Leroy Laws and wife, Janice; sister in law, Mary Ann Bacon Overton; grandchildren, Mallory Lloyd, Trey Lloyd, Tyler Bacon and Josh Bacon; and many nieces and nephews; and a special sister, Bobbie Hunt.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at New Sharon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Nash officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at New Sharon United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Sharon United Methodist Church, 1601 New Sharon Church Rd., Hillsborough, NC 27278.

Mary Fannie Currie

RALEIGH -- Mary Fannie Currie, formerly of Cedar Grove, was born August 23, 1916. She died November 9, 2009 at Oaks of Carolina, Raleigh.

The funeral will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Chavis-Parker Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Hyco Zion Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 1:30 p.m. in Chavis-Parker Funeral Home Chapel.

Survivors are one daughter, Mary Alice Trapp; four sons, Joe Jones, Joshia Jones, Bennie Lewis Jones and Robert Earl Jones.

RALEIGH -- Graveside services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Princeton Cemetery, Dr. Donnie H. Jones Jr. Road, Princeton, with the Rev. Heather Lear officiating.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Anne Lloyd Hutchinson Summerlin; and his two sons, David Carroll Summerlin III and Lloyd Alexander Summerlin, both of Raleigh; his parents, David C. and Mary C. Summerlin Sr. of Durham; three brothers, Gene Neal Summerlin, William Robert Summerlin (Lynda), both of Durham and Thomas Ray Summerlin (Lisa) of Oxford.
