Organist kicks off centennial concerts
CHAPEL HILL — United Church of Chapel Hill, 1321 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., will launch a Centennial Concert Series with a performance by organist Alexander Anderson at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Anderson’s program ranges from the Renaissance to the 19th century, and will feature works by 16th century composers Sweelinck, Frescobaldi, Byrd and Gibbons; a suite by Clérambault; and two chorale preludes and the Prelude and Fugue in e minor by Bach. His program finale will feature Lizst’s Chorale Fantasia “Ad nos, ad salutarem undam” from Meyerbeer’s opera Le Prophete.
Other concerts in the centennial series feature United Church’s brass ensemble and bell choirs on Dec. 6; Bradshaw Quartet with Christen Campbell on Dec. 31; The Ambassadors Jazz Band on Jan. 24; United Church’s Chancel Choir singing Fauré’s Requiem on March 21; and United’s Chamber Singers on April 18.
FolkPsalm concert benefits mission trip
CHAPEL HILL — Charles Pettee and FolkPsalm Trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Amity United Methodist Church, 825 N. Estes Drive.
The concert is a fundraiser for a mission trip. A meet and greet reception will follow. It will be a family-friendly concert of bluegrass and new acoustic music featuring several special selections geared toward children.

Benefit concert of Broadway tunes
CHAPEL HILL — Richard Wall, the music director and organist at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Haw River, will present a best of Broadway show, “A Time for Singing,” at 4 p.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Reception Hall, 300 E. Rosemary St., Chapel Hill.
The event is free, but donations will be accepted and benefit the Habitat for Humanity project of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Global Vaccines. Performers include Jim Burnette, John Cashwell, Steve Dobbins, Shannon French, Nicole Graziano, Janie Imperial, Pelham Jacobs, Emily Johnston, Anna Kirby, Celia LaBranche, Evelyn McCauley, John Oliver and Tom Terry. Wall will be host and pianist.

Fall Revival at Antioch Baptist

LDS film festival this weekend
CHAPEL HILL — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 1050 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., will hold a film festival this weekend and next. All movies will show at 7 p.m.
The schedule: Friday — “One Good Man.” Saturday — “Stone Cutter” and “Baby Boomerang.” Nov. 20 — “Once upon a summer.” Nov. 21 — “The Letter” and “Errand of Angels.” The films were chosen to inspire and motivate. All are welcome, free admission. Popcorn will be available.

New pastor at Bahama Baptist
DURHAM — Bahama Baptist Church, 7917 Willardville Station Road, extended a call to the Rev. Wes McMurray to become its new pastor.
He is currently the pastoral assistant at First Associate Reform Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, and previously served as chaplain and Bible teacher at the Gaston Christian School in Belmont. He has an associate’s degree from Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute and a bachelor’s degree and master of divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.
He and his wife, Jennifer, have two sons, Owen and Elliott. McMurray will preach his first sermon as pastor, on Jan. 17. A service of installation will be planned for a later date.
Quartet, Kitchen at St. Stephen’s
DURHAM — St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 82 Kimberly Drive, will continue its concert series with a performance by the Borromeo String Quartet and organist Joseph Kitchen at 4 p.m. Nov. 22 in the church nave.
The BSQ, founded in 1989, performs music worldwide.
This fall, the quartet began a Beethoven series and a Bartok series at the Gardner Museum. The quartet-in-residence at the New England Conservatory of Music for 17 years, they are known for communicating even the most challenging repertoire so that the audience can comprehend and enjoy. The program will include the Passacaglia and Fugue by J.S. Bach, transcribed for string quartet by Kitchen and played by Kitchen on the Kenan Memorial Flentrop organ. Other works on the program are the “Sunrise” Quartet by Haydn and the Fourth Quartet of Bela Bartok.
A pre-concert discussion of Bartok’s String Quartet No. 4 will be held at 3 p.m. Individual tickets are $15. Free admission for ages 18 and under.
