School honors local veterans

SILK HOPE -- Silk Hope School partnered with the Chatham County Sheriff's Office to honor area veterans and law enforcement with a ceremony attended by the members of the community and the entire school student body on Tuesday.

"This was an opportunity to honor veterans, especially those in the Silk Hope community, and to show honor and respect for their service to our country. Assemblies like this bring to life what our students study in social studies, and it makes a connection to beyond the classroom walls," said Chad Morgan, principal of Silk Hope School.

Morgan and Assistant Principal Valencia Price both had parts on the program. Sheriff Richard Webster and Capt. Charles Gardner of the Sheriff's Office made special remarks during the ceremony. Gardner also led the Sheriff's Office Honor Guard Team as it carried out a presentation of colors at the beginning of the ceremony and retiring of the colors at the close of the ceremony.

Four middle school students teamed to read a poem entitled "It is the Soldier" by Charles M. Province. Cub Scout Pack 911 presented American flags to each veteran in attendance. Kathy Vitaro's PreK class, Nancy Dunn's kindergarten/first grade class, and Lisa Dark's first grade class led all attendees in reciting The Pledge of Allegiance.

Board chooses school name

PITTSBORO -- The newest middle school in the Chatham County Schools district will be named for longtime community activist and public health worker Margaret B. Pollard.

Margaret B. Pollard Middle School, located in the Briar Chapel development off Andrews Store Road in northeastern Chatham County, will open in the fall of 2010 and have a capacity for 650 students in grades six through eight.

The Chatham County Board of Education voted on the name at its meeting Monday night.

A Chatham County native, Pollard was the valedictorian of her graduating class at Horton High School in Pittsboro. She earned an undergraduate and a graduate degree in public health from N.C. Central University and later worked in the field. Pollard was a member of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners from 1994 until 2004. She was board chairwoman from 1996 until 1998. Well known for her strong commitment to community service, Pollard was an inspiration for others to be a part of the betterment of their communities. She served on many community boards, worked with health and human services organizations and was the recipient of many awards prior to her death on September 16, 2009.
