8 DWI arrests recorded here

RALEIGH -- State and local law enforcement officers removed 816 impaired drivers from North Carolina roads during the Halloween "Booze It & Lose It" campaign which ran Oct. 30 through Sunday.

A total of 17,573 traffic and criminal citations were issued statewide.

Officers statewide conducted more than 2,157 sobriety checkpoints and dedicated patrols. Counties with the highest number of DWI citations include: Mecklenburg (80), Wake (59), New Hanover (36).

Among local counties, eight DWI arrests were made in Durham, 11 in Chatham, six in Granville, eight in Orange and 12 in Person.

Statewide, officers issued 1,189 safety belt violations, 252 child passenger safety violations, 4,975 speeding violations and 359 drug charges. In addition, they apprehended 147 fugitives from justice and recovered 24 stolen vehicles.

Heart fundraiser racks up $875K

RALEIGH -- The American Heart Association announced on Thursday that its Start! Triangle Heart Walk raised $875,000 for heart disease and stroke research and education.

The event was held at the RBC Center on Oct. 18 and was attended by more than 15,000 walkers.

Top fundraising companies included:

n Top team with more than 2,000 employees -- Harris Teeter raising $138,919.

n Top team with more than 200 employees -- CarQuest raising $54,651.

n Top team with fewer than 200 employees -- Carolina Hurricanes raising $19,886.

Shelton forum at N.C. State

RALEIGH -- Leaders in government, business and education will join retired Army Gen. Hugh Shelton in providing insights on leadership, ethics and accountability at today's eighth annual General Hugh Shelton Leadership Forum, 8:15 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday at N.C. State University's Jane S. McKimmon Center.

From 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., a leadership roundtable including Erskine Bowles, president of the UNC system, and Julius Chambers, a lawyer and former chancellor of N.C. Central University will discuss leadership "secrets of success."
