Cedar Ridge volleyball advances to state 2-A championship game

BEAULAVILLE -- Chelsea Howlett dished out 30 assists to lead Cedar Ridge to a 3-0 sweep of East Duplin 25-18, 25-14, 25-12 to earn a shot at the state 2-A volleyball championship.

The Red Wolves (25-4) will face North Surry (32-0), which swept Randleman in the West Regional final, on Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum in the title match.

Taylor Thompson led the Cedar Ridge offense with 12 kills, while Emily Holmes added nine. Siarra Cates had seven digs and LeeAnne Maultsby served six aces for the Red Wolves.

GIRLS' TENNIS

Carrboro 5, Northwood 4

PITTSBORO -- Carrboro won a pair of doubles matches to rally past Northwood 5-4 in the state 2-A quarterfinals.

Carrboro (12-7) will face Greene Central (21-6) in the state semifinals.

Alyssa Shuster got the Jaguars on the board with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Jennifer Devinney at No. 1 singles.

Chapel Hill 6, Cardinal Gibbons 3

RALEIGH -- Chapel Hill defeated Cardinal Gibbons to move on to the fourth round of the 3-A state playoffs.

Hannah Kimbrough led the way for the Tigers as she won both her singles and doubles matches.

BOYS' SOCCER

Jordan 2, Wakefield 0

DURHAM -- Nolan Kain and Joaquin Del Rosario netted goals to lead Jordan to a shutout victory over Wakefield in the first round of the state 4-A soccer tournament.

Goalie Kyle Stuart made three saves for the Falcons (20-0) to preserve the win.

Jordan will face Fuquay-Varina (17-4-1) in the second round.

Chapel Hill 5, Rockingham 0

CHAPEL HILL -- Chris Gillespie scored two goals as Chapel Hill cruised past Rockingham in the first round of the 3-A state playoffs.

Jamie Dell and Chipper Root each added a goal and assist for the Tigers. Alex Steiner recorded the fifth goal for the Tiger.
