I-85 repair gets state funding

RALEIGH -- A repair and resurfacing project on I-85 in Orange County is being funded by the N.C. Department of Transportation. The $1.7 million project was announced Tuesday by Gov. Bev Perdue.

The work is among 18 contracts totaling $56.6 million for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina, including 11 projects funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The bids received on all 18 projects advertised came in 16.5 percent, or about $11.1 million, below NCDOT estimates.

In the Orange County project, milling, resurfacing and shoulder reconstruction will be completed along 1.5 miles of I-85 from west of the I-85/I-40 split to the bridges at Orange Grove Road (State Road 1006). The $1.7 million contract was awarded to Rea Contracting LLC of Charlotte. Work can begin as early as March 29, 2010, and is scheduled to be finished by July 16, 2010.

Boiling water advisory ended

HILLSBOROUGH -- The boil water advisory is over for Town of Hillsborough water customers in the Orange Mobile Home Estates and Colonial Hills area east of Hillsborough.

Test results of water samples from the area show the water is safe for consumption.

The town issued the boil water advisory as a precaution the night of Oct. 29 due to work on the water system.

Connections were completed for a 12-inch water main to replace an old, galvanized water main that ran under Interstate 85.

To complete the work, the Water Department had to turn off water to the area for a few hours. Because periods of low or no pressure in the water distribution system increase the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system, the town issued the boil water advisory.

Customers affected included those on Kennedy Circle, Adams Place, Lawrence and Piney Grove Church roads, Lannie, Jefferson and Washington drives and sections of Old N.C. 10.
