DURHAM James Lloyd Cousins

DURHAM — Funeral services for Mr. James Lloyd Cousins, age 63, of 307 N. Guthrie St., will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Family Worship Center, 505 Dowd St.

The body will lie in state from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Worship Center. He is survived by his wife, Katie Cousins; 2 daughters, Jennifer Cousins and Kimberly C. Meadows; 2 sisters, Creola Parker and Ernestine Stewart.

Buxie Edward Keels III

DURHAM — Buxie Edward Keels III, 53, of 1405 Briardale Lane, Durham, died October 26, 2009.

Survivors include his wife, Madeline Keels; his father, Buxie Keels Jr. of Greeleyville, S.C.; mother, Frances Samules of Charleston, S.C.; son, Buxie Keels IV of Franklin, Va. He was preceded in death by one sister, Constance Harper, who resided in St. Louis, Missouri.

Funeral services will be held at Union Baptist Church in Durham on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 1 p.m. Family and friends visitation from noon until 1 p.m. at the church. Immediately after the service a repass is being prepared for the family and their friends.

Services are entrusted to David B. Lawson Mortuary Inc., Graham.

Robert Jackson ‘Jack’ Nance

DURHAM — Mr. Robert Jackson “Jack” Nance, 72, of 634 Junction Road, died on Wednesday, October 28, 2009.

Mr. Nance was a native and lifelong resident of Durham, the son of the late Robert Lee and Betty Porter Nance. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Durham Regional Hospital where he worked in Safety and Security. He was a member of Smith Chapel Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Chappell Nance; one son, Robert Wayne Nance, of Durham; one brother, Leslie Wayne Nance of Durham; and adopted sister, Catherine Darlene Stewart of Longs, S.C.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Jerry Hooper. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be William Newton, Roy Newton, Ronnie Nichols, Tom Hester, Linwood Hester and Don Barbee.

Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to Smith Chapel Baptist Church, 2705 Mansfield Avenue, Durham, NC 27703. Arrangements are being handled by Hudson Funeral Home.

Bobby Tabor Springle

DURHAM — Bobby Tabor Springle, age 79, resident of Durham, died Thursday morning at UNC Hospital.

Born in Beaufort, he was the son of the late Guy Ruben Springle and Elizabeth Lewis Springle.

Mr. Springle was retired from the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War. He retired this past February after 30 years with Primerica Financial Services. He was a member of Butner Masonic Lodge #697 A.F. & A. M. where he was Past Master twice. Mr. Springle was a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory of Raleigh and the Amran Shrine Center. He was a member of St. Benedict’s Anglican Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Buna Pickett Springle; son, Alan Springle and wife, Cindy, of Durham; daughter, Bonnie Rhola of Chapel Hill; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth Richards, Charles Richards and Will Rohla.

A Requiem will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday November 2, 2009, at St. Benedict’s Anglican Catholic Church, Chapel Hill with the Rev. Robert Hart presiding.

Burial will be in Beaufort.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.

Louise B. Tutor

DURHAM — Louise B. Tutor, 88, a former resident of 3531 Cheek Road, died October 29, 2009 at the home of her daughter.

A native of Wake County, the widow of Tom Tutor and the daughter of the late Hubert and Artis Goodwin Babb, she was a member of Faith Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Faith Baptist Church by the Rev. Roger Wall. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.

Surviving are a daughter, Vicki Tutor Bryant (John) of Creedmoor; a son, Steve Tutor (Frankie) of Durham; a sister, Lessie Farrell of Durham; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. A son, Thomas Tutor Jr. preceded her in death.

Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Duke Hospice, 4321 Medical Drive, Suite 101, Durham, NC 27704.

Visitation is 1 to 2 p.m. Monday prior to the funeral at Faith Baptist Church.

Clara Gattis Ward


DURHAM — Clara Gattis Ward passed away peacefully on October 28, 2009 after an extended illness.

A lifelong resident of Durham, she was born August 8, 1914, to the late Leroy and Gertrude Gattis. She was the widow of the late Lochlin Monroe Ward, to whom she was married for 52 years. Mrs. Ward was educated in the Durham City Schools, and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

She was a charter member of the Historical Preservation Society and the Garden Makers Garden Club, as well as a member of the Literacy Society of Durham. She was also an active life member of First Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Ward is survived by her son, Randall Lee Ward of Raleigh; his wife, Susan Parrott Ward; and her daughter, Jan Ward Ashby of Wilmington. Clara will be best remembered for her joie de vivre, an attitude she embraced throughout her life.

She was a gifted and talented woman who demonstrated her art in the creation of lovely homes and gardens, which she always cherished. She remained a true Southern lady throughout her 95 years.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Durham, 305 East Main St, on Sunday, November 1, at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends in the church parlor after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to Urban Ministries of Durham, PO Box 249, Durham, NC 27701.

ORANGE Roy C. Bradshaw

CEDAR GROVE — Roy C. Bradshaw, age 56, of 2712 Mill Creek Road, died Thursday, October 29, 2009 in his home.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009 in Chavis-Parker Funeral Chapel. Burial in White Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation one hour before the funeral 2 to 3 p.m.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Magdelene Warren Bradshaw of the home; two sons, Jeffrey Richmond of Raleigh and Christopher B. Bradshaw of Mebane; three sisters, Helen Jones Bond and Gloria Bradshaw, both of Durham, and Charlene Wade and husband, Randy, of Mebane.

Roy was preceeded in death by his father, Marvin Bradshaw; and brother, Charles Anthony Bradshaw.

ELSEWHERE Ann DeWitt Crowther

STATESBORO, GA. — Mrs. Ann DeWitt Crowther, age 67, died October 29, 2009 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center.

She was born September 17, 1942 in Cordele, Georgia, daughter of the late Ernest and Margaret DeWitt. Ann grew up on Saint Simons Island, Georgia the oldest of four siblings. She graduated with a B.A. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1967, where she also received her master’s degree in English in 1979.

Ann dedicated the majority of her life to editing and teaching the art of writing and the appreciation of literature.

She was the first managing editor of Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill Publishing Company, working alongside founder and former professor Louis Rubin from its inception in 1982 until 1990.

Her teaching career spanned the secondary education level to graduate degree programs that included: Durham County (N.C.) Public Schools; Beaufort Tech (now Technical College of the Low Country); University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Duke University Fuqua School of Business; State University of New York; and for the past 10 years until her retirement in 2008, Georgia Southern University Department of Writing and Linguistics.

Ann was also a gifted artist. She painted landscape and still works depicting the coastal scenes, plants and flowers of Saint Simons Island and South Georgia. Many of her paintings hang in the homes of her family and friends. Over the years they became a favorite gift on special occasions to those she knew and loved. Of all her attributes, she was foremost a loving mother and devoted wife.

She is survived by her husband, Jeff Crowther, Statesboro, Ga; a son, Parks and his wife, Mary Kathryn Moss of Savannah, Ga; two daughters, Margaret and husband, Gray Taylor of Mt. Pleasant, S.C; and Elizabeth Moss of St. Petersburg, Fla.; four grandchildren; her sister, Mary Lane James of St. Simons Island, Ga.; two brothers, Ernest DeWitt III of St. Simons Island, Ga., Tommy DeWitt of Brunswick, Ga.

The visitation will be held on Sunday from 2 until 3:30 p.m. at the Georgia Southern University Botanical Gardens.

A remembrance service will be held at 3:30 p.m.
