Dave Odom now Maui chair -- Former coach Dave Odom is the new chairman of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

Odom, who coached at Wake Forest and South Carolina after an early job as Durham High School's coach, was chosen Tuesday to replace Big East commissioner Dave Gavitt in running the eight-team invitational celebrating its 26th anniversary next month.

Odom took the Demon Deacons -- and player of the year Tim Duncan -- to the round of eight in the 1996 NCAA tournament and his teams made the tourney a total of 10 times.

Gavitt remains with the invitational as co-chairman emeritus with former chairman Wayne Duke, who served as commissioner of the Big Eight and Big Ten.

Odom, a longtime board member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches who currently serves on the NCAA Ethics Committee, left South Carolina after the 2007-08 season, capping a 30-year coaching career. He won three NIT championships, two ACC tournament titles and one ACC regular-season championship.

UK president: School is trying to protect Wall -- Kentucky president Lee Todd says he has no problem with the way the school has handled the investigation into freshman point guard John Wall's eligibility.

Todd said Tuesday the school was simply trying to protect Wall and did not apologize for keeping quiet about Wall's status. ESPN.com reported last week the NCAA was looking into whether Wall's relationship with his AAU coach -- who worked briefly as a licensed sports agent during Wall's high school career -- violated NCAA amateurism rules.

"It's an issue that we've been working on and it's one where we're protecting the player," Todd said. "We don't know what the answer will be, but when it comes out we'll be transparent."

The report said the school has known about the situation for some time, but Todd said the university did not want to put Wall and his family through press scrutiny.

"There's no reason to expose the young man to a lot of newspaper articles when it's not necessary until we know the final decision," Todd said.

Knight refuses Indiana's offer -- Bob Knight has two more complaints with Indiana University.

He didn't like the school making a private matter public, and he didn't want Indiana alumni footing the bill to settle a lawsuit.

On Tuesday, Knight released a statement saying he will return a $75,000 check sent last week by Indiana officials as a settlement offer.

"Indiana University has refused for nine years to take care of their obligation in this matter," Knight said in a statement released by ESPN, who he now works for. "I did not know until yesterday [Monday] that this check was sent to my attorney. Upon finding out about it, I immediately gave him instructions to send the check back."

Capitals 4, Flyers 2 -- Alexander Semin returned from a two-game absence with a tiebreaking goal and an assist, Jose Theodore stopped Darroll Powe's penalty shot later in the third period, and Washington beat Philadelphia.

Alex Ovechkin scored two goals -- including an empty-netter in the final minute -- and Nicklas Backstrom had four points for the Capitals. The Southeast Division leaders rallied from a 2-0 deficit to stretch their winning streak to five games.

After a scoreless opening period, Scott Hartnell and Braydon Coburn put in power-play goals in the second to put the Flyers ahead.

But the game was tied heading into the third.
