LOCAL BRIEFS
CHAPEL HILL — Heels4Hope will hold its first race on Halloween at 10 a.m. on the UNC campus. The 5K Challenge starts at the Bell Tower, and post-race festivities will be at Granville Towers (125 W. Franklin St.).
Heels4Hope, established in February as a nonprofit, also announces its major sponsors and beneficiaries and invites people to register for the race at its Web site www.heels4hope.com. The charities to receive the proceeds from the race include the Arc of Orange County, the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and Push America.
The event is the brainchild of Blake Zanardi, a UNC junior from Greensboro. “We all know someone who has or had cancer,” said Zanardi, a nursing and Spanish major who is also a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. He was inspired to organize the race in honor of his piano teacher, Geraldine Bjork, who lost her battle with breast cancer in January.
Major sponsors of the event include Top of the Hill Restaurant and Brewery, A Better Image Printing, Julian’s, Residence Hall Association-UNC, Sugarland, Caribou Coffee, Aveda Institute, Fleet Feet Sports Carrboro, RoadID, Runner’s World, Granville Towers and Hatch.
To make a donation, register for the race, or learn more, visit www.heels4hope.com.

Group seeks nominations
HILLSBOROUGH — The Orange County Human Relations Commission is inviting members of the Orange County Community to submit nominations for the 2009 Pauli Murray Human Relations Award. This award honors those who have a significant history of promoting and fostering better human relations among the diverse residents of Orange County.
Originally established in 1990, the Pauli Murray Human Relations Award commemorates the life and achievements of the late Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray. Her family had deep roots in Orange County, where her grandmother was a slave and her great-grandfather was a slaveowner.
Nomination forms and criteria information can be accessed by visiting the Web site address: http://www.co.orange.nc.us/hrr/pmurray.asp. The nomination information is also available from the Department of Human Rights and Relations; Orange County public libraries; and the Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough town halls.
