Library hosts job fair

DURHAM-- Durham County Library is hosting a job fair Nov. 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the East Regional Library, 211 Lick Creek Lane.

More than 20 area companies are slated to attend the job fair, and more are being added. All participating employers have current openings.

Studies show that libraries experience an increase in visits, computer use and circulation when the economy is in crisis. Much of that increase can be attributed to customers seeking help finding a job or looking for other resources to help them weather the tough times. According to the American Library Association's 2008 State of America's Libraries Report, Americans visited their libraries nearly 1.3 billion times and checked out more than 2 billion items in the past year, an increase of more than 10 percent compared to data from the last economic downturn in 2001. East Regional Library Reference Librarian Donald Bradsher said Durham County Library wants to respond to the community's need for additional services.

"We have seen an increase in jobseekers using the library's resources to help find employment," Bradsher said. "Customers have always been able to get resume assistance and help with online applications at the library. By partnering with the North Carolina Employment Security Commission/JobLink to host this job fair, we're taking our customer service to the next level."

Participants are encouraged to bring a resume. The job fair is free and open to the public. For information, call 560-0206.
