N.C. Mutual fete set for Monday
DURHAM -- N.C. Mutual Life Insurance Co. will celebrate its 111th anniversary on Monday.
The event, open to the public, will begin at noon in Beechwood Cemetery, located at 3300 Fayetteville St.
Founded in 1898 by seven men and later built by three distinguished members of the Durham African-American community -- John Merrick, Dr. Aaron M. Moore and Charles C. Spaulding -- N.C. Mutual is now the oldest insurance company chartered in North Carolina.
"With each passing year, the historic significance of North Carolina Mutual and the role the company played in Durham's 'Black Wall Street' become more evident." said James H. Speed, Jr., President and CEO. "The founders of the Mutual sought 'to serve the underserved' and to consider the lives touched by this philosophy in the past 111 years is humbling. It is that rich historic connection that has us determined to keep moving forward and to continue to serve."
