Reminder: Swine flu vaccine available Monday
DURHAM -- The county will host free H1N1 -- swine flu -- vaccine clinics for elementary school-aged students from 3-7 p.m. Monday and again Wednesday at the Durham Public Schools Staff Development Center, 2107 Hillandale Road.
The clinic will be open to children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Children do not have to be enrolled in DPS to receive the vaccine."
Children under 10 will receive two doses of 2009 H1N1 vaccine, at an interval of four weeks. Follow up H1N1 immunization clinics will be scheduled in November to provide the second dose to these children. The vaccine given to children 10 and older will only need to be given once. The vaccine is administered as a nasal spray. No injections will be given. The vaccine is offered free as long as supplies last.
A child is ineligible for the vaccine if he has a significant underlying medical condition, such as asthma or kidney disease, receiving aspirin therapy, or has received flu mist in the prior 30 days.
Legal consent is required for a child to receive the vaccine. Therefore, a parent or legal guardian must accompany the child to the immunization clinic.
