Community Jazz & Art at Third Friday

DURHAM -- Durham Parks and Recreation will hold its final event in the Third Friday Series today with a Community Jazz & Art Jamboree at the CCB Plaza (201 N. Corcoran St.) in downtown Durham from 6 to 8 p.m. This event will be held in conjunction with the Third Friday Durham Culture Crawl.

The community is invited to enjoy an evening of art and music expression with father and son duo, Ed and Ron Baxter. Participants can paint their personal view of music, which will be combined with other artistic works to create a community mural.

Concert to honor voice teacher Wing

CHAPEL HILL -- A Saturday concert will honor retiring voice professor Stafford Wing's 40 years of service to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Wing Singers: A Celebration in Song," free to the public, will be at 2 p.m. in Hill Hall Auditorium.

The concert will feature performances by Wing, head of the voice area in the College of Arts and Sciences' music department, as well as several former UNC music students who studied under him. They include Grammy-nominated Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Victoria Livengood and music department chair and director of opera Terry Rhodes.

The performers will sing a wide array of music, including works by Beethoven, Mozart, Verdi, Ravel, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Rodgers and Hammerstein. The performance will conclude with a choral ensemble directed by Wing.

Jazz Attack to play at Carolina Theatre

DURHAM -- Rick Braun, Jonathan Butler and Richard Elliott combine forces as Jazz Attack in a performance at the Carolina Theatre at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Braun started playing trumpet when he was eight years old and began composing songs when he was just 10. Braun's musical career took off while attending the Eastman School of Music where he formed the jazz-fusion group Auracle. Butler, a singer, Grammy nominated songwriter, guitarist and producer, was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, and spent his youth under the shroud of apartheid. Scottish-born tenor saxophonist Elliot was raised in Los Angeles, landing his first job while still a teenager with Natalie Cole and the Pointer Sisters. He first found fame as a member of the funk band Tower of Power.

Chapel Hill High Chorus to perform

CHAPEL HILL -- The Chapel Hill High School Chorus will perform its season inaugural concert Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the school's Hanes Theatre, 1709 High School Road.

Students will be performing a variety of repertoire from the American folk song and spiritual genre, to African chant, Japanese composition, German art song and traditional choral standards. The concert will produce a variety of vocal sounds and musical exploration.

Tickets are $6 for adults, and $3 for students,

The high school's orchestra will perform a concert Thursday at 7:30 p.m., also in Hanes Theatre. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students.

Funktion to perform at Bean And Barrel

Funktion will perform at Bean And Barrel in Governor's Village just south of Chapel Hill Saturday.

Led by saxophonist Brannon Bollinger, the quartet also includes Rick Zayas on keyboards, Gary Mitchell on drums and Jeremy Boomhower on bass.

This show starts at 7 p.m. Bean And Barrel is at 50100 Governor's Drive in the Governor's Village Shopping Center. For details, call 967-9990.

'Three Backyards' premieres today

DURHAM -- Ken Rumble and Megan Stein will present a new art installation, "Three Backyards," from 7:30 to 10 p.m. today at 715 Washington Street in Durham.

"Three Backyards" is a site and time-specific piece that will run for one night only during Durham's Third Friday events. The piece will include live performance, both musical and non-musical.

Visitors may drop in and out as they desire throughout the evening. The work is composed of four pieces: "Shells (Empty)," "How Will You Know," "Master Pieces" and "big gila monster, little gila monster."

Admission is free. Donations for 715 are always accepted.

Pianist Perahia to give talk

Three-time Grammy winning pianist Murray Perahia will talk about his life and work during a talk at 5 p.m. Monday in the Nelson Music Room, East Duke Building, Duke University.

Short films event at ArtsCenter

CARRBORO -- Winners of this year's Indy Arts Award for Film team up with the Playwrights Roundtable for a Sunday of Short Films at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro Sunday at 3 p.m.

The program is a collaboration that creates a link between the theatre and film communities by showcasing the range of talent in the Triangle. The two creative communities will join forces to premiere original works, and show sneak previews of works in progress.

Take 5 features films by five artists: Roundtable Playwrights Dave Rabinowitz and Mark Cornell as well as Filmmakers Nic Beery, Todd Tinkham, and Kelley Katzenmeyer.

Barbershop group takes prize

Twice a year the Barbershop Harmony Society hosts regional contests for its member singers across America. On Oct. 3, central North Carolina-based "Let's Sing!" took first place among 24 quartets competing in the Dixie District Competition in Chattanooga, Tenn. The foursome wrapped up their two-day contest with an arrangement of "Yesterday I Heard the Rain" and brought the auditorium crowd to their feet with a spirited a cappella performance of "A Wink and A Smile".

"Let's Sing!" includes members from both Triangle and Triad area hometowns. Lead singer, Mark Chandler and baritone, Joe Doub, are members of 'Triad Harmony Express' in Winston-Salem, bass Greg Zinke directs the 'Greensboro Tarheel Chorus' and tenor Steve Tremper sings with both the Durham 'Heart of Carolina' and Raleigh's 'General Assembly' choruses.

DPS All-County Chorus concert

DURHAM --The fourth annual Durham Public Schools High School All-County Chorus performance will be Saturday at 7 p.m. at Hillside High School. This district-wide event highlights the pure singing abilities of select high school choral students from Durham Public Schools.

The participating Durham high schools are Durham School of the Arts, Hillside, Jordan, Northern, and Riverside. This group of singers will perform a varied and challenging repertoire of choral music under the direction of Richard Banks, associate professor of music at North Carolina Central University.
