BYNUM -- That annual Halloween glow along the shoreline of the Haw River will be shimmering on the water this year, too, when the Haw River Pumpkin Paddle casts off from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 31.

For many years, there has been a Halloween tradition on the pedestrian bridge over the Haw River in Bynum in which beautifully carved pumpkins are lined up along both sides of the bridge. People come from miles away to walk the bridge and enjoy the nighttime spectacle.

A relatively new, on-water tradition has also developed on Halloween evenings.

Both experienced and beginner-level paddlers meet at the highway bridge in Bynum for a nighttime float. Before launching, a carved pumpkin is attached to each boat.

Some paddlers attach a pumpkin to both the bow and stern. Glow sticks in the pumpkins provide the illumination.

For those not accustomed to paddling in the dark, it is a truly unique and special experience.

After completing the water portion of the event, participants then walk the pedestrian bridge to view the artwork on display.

Pumpkin Paddles are held on Halloween evening on the Haw River upstream of the dam at Bynum. Participants must arrive there by 5:30 p.m.

The trip will begin once all of the boats get to the launch site and attach the pumpkins. The paddle will finish by 9 p.m., in time to walk the pedestrian bridge in Bynum.

The Haw River Canoe and Kayak Company provides a canoe or kayak, personal flotation device, paddle, glow sticks and at least one experienced guide/naturalist.

Guests are responsible for the carved pumpkin(s) they will attach to their boats, transportation to and from the meeting location, foot wear that can get dirty and/or wet, dry clothes to leave in your vehicle, appropriate clothing for the season, hat, insect repellant, water bottle and flashlight.

A camera is recommended.

The flashlight is essential for sure footing at the end of the trip.

The trip fee is $25 per person.

If a participant brings a canoe or kayak, the trip fee is $20 per person.

You must be registered and paid in full before being allowed to go on the trip.

Participants will be required to read and sign a liability waiver and pay attention to the safety briefing presented before the trip begins.
