Library book sale coming up

DURHAM — Find great bargains on gently used books at the Friends of the Durham Library Fall Book Sale, Friday through Sunday at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.

Proceeds support Durham County Library programs and services.

Prices start at 50 cents for paperbacks and $1 for hardbacks. Early shoppers will find the best selection of specially priced books in gift giving condition. On Sunday books will be sold by the bag in the auditorium and garage at just $7 per bag.

The sale begins Friday with a Friends members-only evening from 4 to 7 p.m. Friends members have first choice at the sale, and everyone is encouraged to join the Friends. Memberships can be purchased at the door beginning at 2 p.m.

All are welcome Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Parking is free at the library; overflow parking is available.

Latrigue to speak at NCCU

DURHAM — On Wednesday, North Carolina Central University will hold a lecture featuring Casey Lartigue, education and policy analyst.

“Government: Friend or Foe of Minorities?” will take place at 6 p.m. in the Eagle Landing Conference Room on campus.

“Lartigue is the first of a series of guest speakers to visit NCCU’s campus this academic year to represent a variety of political viewpoints,” said Dr. Timothy Holley, director of University Honors Program.

Lartigue is co-editor of the book “Educational Freedom in Urban American: Brown v. Board of Education after Half a Century.”

This lecture is sponsored by the North Carolina Central University Honors Program, the John W. Pope Center for Higher Education Policy, and the Arthur Rupe Foundation.

Book discussion at Regulator

DURHAM — At 7 p.m. Wednesday at The Regulator Bookshop, David Carr, associate professor at UNC’s School of Information and Library Science, will lead a book discussion on “Something for the Pain.” Bring thoughts and questions about the book for discussion.

The event is part of Durham Reads Together, a communitywide reading event. Durham County Library encourages everyone to read the selected book, to attend Durham Reads Together programs and events, and to meet the author. Durham Reads Together 2009 is sponsored by the Friends of the Durham Library.

Senate hopeful to speak

DURHAM — Durham attorney and U.S. Senate hopeful Kenneth Lewis will talk about the economic situation Friday at the N.C. Business Roundtable’s noon luncheon.

There will be discussion about entrepreneurs, executives and community activists better using their elected officials to help build their business and community projects. Lewis, a Democrat, also is expected to address what he’d do to help businesses if he’s elected to the U.S. Senate.

The theme for the gathering is “Managing Your Business Economic Recovery.” The luncheon will take place at the University Club, 3100 Tower Blvd., Suite 1700. Seating is limited. Those interested in attending should send a note to Tommy T. McNeill at ttmcneill@hotmail.com.

Two big names at Sports Club

DURHAM — Duke men’s basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski will speak to the Durham Sports Club on Oct. 21 at Croasdaile Country Club at 11:30 a.m.

The cost for guests to attend is $20.

The featured speaker Nov. 4 will be UNC men’s basketball coach Roy Williams.
