CHAPEL HILL -- Orange County Voice, which has vigorously opposed siting a county waste transfer station in Bingham Township, is now involved in waste disposal and recycling controversies arising from Orange County's plans to alter services at its convenience centers. The grassroots organization has developed the Talkin' Trash Survey that it says will allow rural residents to join the conversation about the controversial plans.

Paper copies of the survey have been placed at locations throughout the rural county.

The organization is hoping to get feedback to Orange County's "Solid Waste Workgroup Plan," which is about to be issued. The plan is expected to recommend new services ranging from improving convenience centers to extending curbside pickup services to every rural household. New fees are coming, too. For those reasons, Orange County Voice says, input from rural residents is urgently needed.

So it is asking those who live outside town limits to take the survey. It has 39 questions that are designed to understand how a person handles household trash and what services and fees the survey participant would like to see in the future.

Survey results will be reported to the County Commissioners and to the public in November.
