Literacy conference this week in Durham

Wachovia/Wells Fargo will be hosting a financial literacy conference Tuesday and Wednesday at the Sheraton Imperial hotel in Durham.

Wachovia will introduce to attendees Wells Fargo's "Hands on Banking," a financial education program geared for all age ranges.

The financial institution is providing scholarships to the conference for its current top-performing financial literacy partners and will hold a ceremony on the first day of the conference for them.

The conference, called "Pathways to Prosperity: Financial Stability for all in Changing Times," will kick off 11:30 a.m. at 4700 Emperor Blvd.

Wells Fargo and Wachovia officials, including Sharon McLendon, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Regional Diverse Segments Manager for North and South Carolinas and Joanna LeClair, Community Development Officer for the Triangle and Triad Regions, will be in attendence.

- Rick Weddle, president and CEO of the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina, the organization in charge of the strategic direction of The Research Triangle Park, has been recognized by the International Economic Development Council with a 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Economic Development.

Under his leadership since 2004, RTP has generated developments with a projected capital investment of more than $800 million and projected creation of more than 6,300 new jobs, according to RTP.

- The Kiwanis Club of Tobaccoland, a civic organization, installed its 2009-10 officers at their 49th Annual Awards and Installation Banquet held recently at the Croasdaile Country Club.

Installed were: President, Brian Bishop; President Elect, Patty Gentry; Immediate Past President, Beth Payne; Secretary, Ken Lineberger; and treasurer, Steve Hantzmon.

The board members are: Phil Wolf, Haywood Davis, Margie Dietz, Barbara Baker, Clinton Rogers, Homer Bass and Ward Setzer.
