Henry Battle Abernethy

DURHAM — Henry Battle Abernethy died peacefully on October 10 after a very brief illness. He was 95 years old, born May 5, 1914 in East Durham and lived his entire life in the Durham area. He was the last surviving member of a family of eight brothers and sisters. Mr. Abernethy served in the Army during WWII, and was retired for many years from the US Postal Service. He was an active, lifelong member of the Episcopal Church.

Mr. Abernethy is survived by his wife of 57 years, Josie Roten Abernethy, two children Gary Abernethy of Asheville, and Donna Abernethy Fleming, of Waxhaw and their spouses; his granddaughters, Meredith Abernethy, and Katherine and Christine Fleming, and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Mr. Abernethy’s life will be held 2 p.m. Monday, October 12 in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends at church from 1-2 p.m. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Sue Miller Harlow

DURHAM — Sue Miller Harlow passed away peacefully October 8, 2009. She was at her home with her husband, Walt Harlow. Sue was born on August 13, 1946, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, where her father was attending Law School at the University of Michigan. She grew up in Durham, North Carolina, graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill with a BBA degree in 1967. She and Walt were married on March 23, 1968, in the Wake Forest University Chapel.

Sue’s mission in life was to be a wife and a mother to her children. She succeeded admirably with Christopher, 39, of Arlington, Virginia, and William, 35, of Fairfax, Virginia; Bill’s wonderful wife, Nicole, and two equally wonderful twin grandchildren, Abbey and Ryan, age 4.

Sue was preceded in death by her father, career FBI agent Charles S. Miller, and mother, June C. Miller, of Durham. In addition to her husband and sons, Sue is survived by brother, Jon C. Miller, and his wife Patricia, and brother Thomas R. Miller and his wife Kim, all of Durham.

At Sue’s request, arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas. There will be a private graveside ceremony with the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Fred N. Lloyd Jr.

DURHAM — Fred N. Lloyd Jr., of Whispering Pines, passed on September 21, 2009. There will be no memorial service as he requested. A native of Durham, he was the son of the late Fred N. Lloyd Sr., and the late Beverly Redford Glenn. He graduated from Elon University and later received an MAT degree from Webster University in St. Louis, Mo.

After selling his carpet cleaning and fire restoration business, Mr. Lloyd spent many years teaching and counseling students and, later, people who had lost their jobs. Beginning in 1998 he became an Assistant Golf Professional in the Pinehurst area, retiring in 2005. Golf was always his sport, and he was very successful in the mid 1970’s as an amateur, winning the Herald-Sun and Durham Amateur tournaments in 1976.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Lee Lloyd; sons, Fred N. Lloyd III, of Edenton, Geoffrey A. Lloyd of Wake Forest, and Jon G. Lloyd of Angier; granddaughters, Barbara Lloyd and Brenna Lloyd; great-grandson, Noah Newman; stepdaughter, Diane Hammond; stepson, Carl Bumann; and step-grandsons, Hunter Eubanks, Noah Hammond and Benjamin Hammond.

Frederick E. Mangum


DURHAM — Frederick Mangum of Charlotte, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 7, 2009.

Born May 17, 1963 to Waylon and Lether Mangum, Frederick was raised in Durham and attended Southern High School. He went on to work at Duke Hospital, later moving to Charlotte and working at Carolina’s Medical Center. For the past 15 years he has pursued his first love — music and the stage — singing, producing and touring throughout the US with Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. In the summer of 2009, Frederick’s first solo single, ‘Mama Didn’t Know’ reached number three on the Beach Music Charts. He recently finished recording his first solo CD scheduled to be released in 2010.

Frederick is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Lether Mangum. He is survived by his father, Waylon Mangum of Durham; son, Christopher Mangum of Charlotte; daughters, Sierra Mangum of Charlotte; Courtney Mangum of Durham; and Tricia Dean of Knoxville, Tenn.; brothers, Ronald Mangum (Shirley), and Roderick Mangum (Gloria); sisters, Patricia Leake (Jesse), Deborah Allen (Kerry), and Alicia Mangum, all of Durham; aunts, Emma Garrett and Hallie Green, of Durham; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Frederick was expecting his first grandchild in December.

A wake is scheduled for Monday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home. Funeral and burial will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church where Frederick was a member.

Margaret Juanita Parker Page


DURHAM — Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Juanita Parker Page, 87, of 100 Shalimar Drive, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at White Rock Baptist Church, 3400 Fayetteville Street. Family visitation, one hour prior to service.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Anita Holmes and Joyce C. Page; one son, Waverly Louis Page; one granddaughter, Neena Joyce Page Ramsey; two sisters, Jean Esther Parker and Bertha Mae Bacote.

Alex ‘Jack’ Pressley


DURHAM — Alex ‘Jack’ Pressley, 71 of Durham, died on Tuesday, October 6, 2009.

He is survived by his niece, Gwendolyn Prince Cash of Durham.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 12, 2009 at 12 noon at Holloway Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at 11:30 a.m.. The family will receive friends at 16 Phauff Court, Durham, N.C.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Holloway Funeral Home.

William Madison ‘Pops’ Regan

DURHAM — William Madison ‘Pops’ Regan, 80, of 6710 Mt. Herman Church Road, Lot 12, died Friday, October 9, 2009, in Duke Medical Center.

Mr. Regan was born in Wake County to the late George and Hennie Glass Regan. Before retiring, he was employed by Pilot Freight Carriers for 39 years. Mr. Regan attended Friendly Hills Baptist Church. He loved playing the guitar and mandolin and loved fishing. Mr. Regan was a beloved husband and father, whose sweet smile and soft heart will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his wife, Margie Lynch Regan; two sons, Boe Ragan of Rougemont and Jeff Regan of Durham; five daughters, Susan Cates of Hillsborough, Pam Wilkins of Durham, Nancy Dunnagan of Durham, Carol Rose of Franklinton and Gina Parrish of Benson; two sisters, Mary Medlin of Goldsboro and Rachel Choate of Indiana; 20 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hudson Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Pastor Bobby Tate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be grandsons.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hudson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to a favorite charity.

Robert John Shields

DURHAM — Mr. Robert John Shields, 87, a resident of Durham, NC, died Thursday morning at his home. Mr. Shields was the son of the late Leon Grady Shields and the late Jane Whittle Norman Shields. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Jane Norman Shields Brown. Prior to retirement, Mr. Shields owned and operated Shields IGA and later was employed by Wal-Mart. He was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church. Mr. Shields was a graduate of the UNC CH and served in World War II as a Bomber Pilot in the Eighth Air Force.

Surviving is his wife, Melba Louise Ray Shields; two sons, Grady Ray Shields and wife Donna of Durham and Robert John Shields, III and wife Sophia of Orange Park, Fla.; six grandchildren. Diana (Chris) Sarama, Lance Shields, Adrienne Stevens, Laura (John) Carter, Robert Shields IV and David Shields; and five great grandchildren, Stephen Sarama, Sophia Sarama, Nolan Carter, Noelle Carter, and Savannah Stevens.

A Graveside Service will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro. The family will receive friends at Clements Funeral Home in Durham Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Alamance Elma Waller Murdock

SNOW CAMP — Mrs. Elma Waller Murdock died Friday at her home. Mrs. Murdock was 85. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; Annie Harrell Waller and Rome W. Waller.

Mrs. Murdock is survived by her husband, Dewitt F. Murdock; daughter, Barbara Murdock Morris and husband Larry of Snow Camp, NC; daughter, Brenda Murdock of Pittsboro, NC; son; Brent Murdock and wife Patty of Roxboro, NC; grandchildren, Tracy Morris, Lisa Robert, Allison Murdock, and Garrett Murdock; great grandchildren, Casey Morris and Charlotte Robert; and sisters, Iris Dodson and Muriel Byrd.

A graveside service will be held at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens on Monday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Herbert Brown officiating. The family will receive friends at Clements Funeral Home on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m.
