DURHAM -- Parkwood Elementary School students for the 10th year walked to school as part of International Walk to School Day.

Wednesday, hundreds of Parkwood Elementary School students, their families and teachers walked safely to school with the help of safety advocates in our community including FedEX employees, the Durham Police Department's TACT and Motor Unit, Parkwood Fire /EMS personnel, Duke Emergency and Trauma Services staff and the Durham Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission.

Community safety advocates came together to help students understand the importance of pedestrian safety as they walk to school, while at play and when they walk around town.

"Ten years ago, we did our first Walk to School at Parkwood with about 28 students, and coalition members. Our efforts have grown to mark our 10-year anniversary with IWTSD event where over 500 students, staff, families and coalition members walked safely to school," said Theresa Cromling, safe kids coordinator. "It's this kind of community involvement that can make a difference in the lives of these children."
