Children's group meets Thursday

DURHAM -- Durham's Partnership for Children will hold its 2009-2010 annual Meeting for more than 150 community leaders, volunteers and funded partners on Thursday from 8-10 a.m. at the Hilton Durham Hotel, 3800 Hillsborough Road.

The program will include a public release of the Partnership's 2008-09 Annual Report and an overview of the Partnership's 2008-09 investments in Early Care and Education, Child Health and Early Intervention, and Family Support. The meeting will also highlight the Partnership's work to mobilize the community around multiple initiatives on behalf of early childhood.

County Commissioner Ellen Reckhow, the nominating chairwoman, will present a new slate of officers for 2009-10.

Valora Washington, [resident of the Community Advocates for Young Learners Institute, will be the keynote speaker of the event.

Housing coalition tour set Saturday

DURHAM -- The Durham Affordable Housing Coalition will host its 10th annual Campaign for Decent Housing Tour from 12:30-4 p.m. Oct. 17 at City Neighborhood Improvement Services on the third floor of Golden Belt Building 2, 807 E. Main St. -- off Morning Glory Avenue.

The event will begin with lunch and an anniversary program and will be followed by a bus tour of homes and neighborhoods from 1:15-2:45 and a discussion of goals and setting 2010 priorities from 3-4 p.m.

Bethesda Park ceremony set

DURHAM -- The Department of Parks and Recreation will host the official groundbreaking ceremony for Bethesda Park, 3801 Cash Road, at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Duke recital tonight canceled

DURHAM -- An Elizabeth Linnartz/Allen Bailey recital scheduled for 8 tonight in the Nelson Music Room in the East Duke Building on Duke University's East Campus, has been canceled.

Battle of Bands set for Sunday

DURHAM -- The seventh annual Annual Adrian Carroll N.C. High School/College Battle Of The Bands and Step Show will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Durham County Stadium, 2700 Stadium Drive.

Gates open at 3 p.m.

The program will feature the Hillside Hornets and the Southern Durham Marching Bands and a special guest appearance by Team Tokyo. Bands competing from North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C. and range from the A to AAAA level.

Tickets are $12, $10 in advance and free for children four and under.
