Short story event at Deep Dish

CHAPEL HILL -- The Deep Dish Theater Company will present an evening of readings, "Apro-Poe," Friday at 7:30 p.m. Admission for the event is a suggested donation of $5 or a non-perishable food item, with proceeds to benefit the Inter-faith Council's Food Bank.

As with previous short story evenings, "Apro-Poe" will be curated by David Carr, who will join Deep Dish actors in reading a selection of stories by Edgar Allan Poe and by contemporary writers using his work as inspiration. This year marks the 200th anniversary of Poe's birth.

Public discussion of 'Sugar Beach'

CHAPEL HILL -- The Chapel Hill Public Library will hold a public discussion of Helen Cooper's book "The House at Sugar Beach: In Search of a Lost African Childhood" Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the library at 100 Library Drive.

Cooper was born into a Liberian family descended from freed American slaves. She came of age in the 1980s when her homeland slipped into civil war. Years after the family's exile to America and a successful career as a journalist, she returns to Liberia to reclaim her childhood and reunite with her "country-sister" who had been left behind.

Conescu to speak at author tea

CHAPEL HILL -- William Conescu, author of "Being Written," will be the guest at a Meet the Author Tea to be held Friday at the Chapel Hill Public Library, 100 Library Drive.

Refreshments will be served at 3:30 p.m., and the program will take place from 4 to 5 p.m.

Conescu will read from "Being Written," the story of Danie Fischer, who knows he's a minor character in someone else's book and hungers for a bigger part in the plot.

Conescu graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned an MFA in creative writing at North Carolina State University.

His short stories have appeared in The Gettysburg Review, New Letters, Green Mountain Review, and other publications. He lives in Chapel Hill.

Peltier to speak at Beyond the Books

CHAPEL HILL --Maggie Peltier, owner and operator of FamPhotory, will discuss how to keep memories alive during a Beyond the Books program at the Chapel Hill Public Library.

The program will take place at the library from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the library's meeting room. The library is at 100 Library Drive.

Bowers to discuss journalism history

CHAPEL HILL -- Tom Bowers, professor emeritus at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UNC, will be at the Bull's Head Bookshop in UNC Student Stores Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. to read from his book "Making News: One Hundred Years of Journalism and Mass Communication at Carolina."

"Making News" is the story of how the School of Journalism grew from a single course in the English Department in 1909 to become an international leader in journalism and mass communication education.

The Bull's Head Bookshop is in the UNC Student Stores on the campus of UNC. All events at the Bull's Head are free and open to the public. Call 962-5060 for questions.

Reevy to read new poems

CHAPEL HILL -- Tony Reevy, senior associate director of the Institute for the Environment at UNC, will be at the Bull's Head Bookshop in UNC Student Stores Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. to read from his latest collection of poems, "In Mountain Lion Country."

Reevy is a graduate of North Carolina State University, UNC-Chapel Hill and Miami University. He is a David P. Morgan Award winner (2006) and a Pushcart Prize nominee. He lives in Durham with his wife, Caroline Weaver, and children Lindley and Ian.
