Doctor indicted in fatal crash

RALEIGH -- A North Carolina grand jury has indicted a doctor on multiple charges in connection with a wreck that killed a 20-year-old ballerina.

Raymond Dwight Cook of Raleigh was indicted Monday by a Wake County grand jury on charges of second-degree murder, careless and reckless driving and driving while impaired. Officials say the 42-year-old plastic surgeon was driving 85 mph in a 45 mph zone when he struck the car of Elena Bright Shapiro, a Winston-Salem ballerina, earlier this month. Shapiro died of her injuries.

WRAL-TV reports that a search warrant shows Cook had a blood alcohol content of .19 two hours after the crash. Cook is out of jail on bond.

Soldier hit by lightning ID'd

FAYETTEVILLE -- A North Carolina woman who was holding a child when they were struck by lightning has been identified as an Army soldier.

Officials at Fort Bragg said Monday that Spc. Rosa V. Sanchez is a personnel clerk assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 330th Transportation Battalion, 82nd Sustainment Brigade.

The Fayetteville Fire Department said the 21-year-old Sanchez and the 18-month-old child were hit Friday afternoon after shopping at a store. It is unclear whether the child is related to Sanchez.

Fire officials said Sanchez was carrying the boy and an umbrella when she was struck.

A UNC Hospitals spokeswoman said Sanchez is hospitalized in serious condition.

The child is listed in fair condition.
