Bessie Harward

DURHAM -- Mrs. Bessie Harward died Thursday at Brookshire Nursing Center.

She was born in Moore Co., the daughter of the late Betty Myrtle Cameron Thomas and the late Melton Thomas. Prior to retirement she was employed by Baldwin's Clothing Store. Mrs. Harward was a member of Grey Stone Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Douglas Harward.

Mrs. Harward is survived by a son, Ronnie Wayne Harward and wife, Virginia, of Durham; grandson, Doug Harward and wife, Ellen, of Durham; sister, Thelma Browning of Durham; niece, Barbara Duke of Butner; and great grandchildren, Ryan Harward, Brendan Harward and Grace Harward.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with Dr. Malbert Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Evelyn Satterfield Lyon

DURHAM -- Evelyn Satterfield Lyon passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at Spring Arbor Assisted Living Facility.

Evelyn was born on November 17, 1921 in Roxboro, where she lived until going to college at East Carolina University, graduating in 1942. She was a devoted, caring, loving homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother, and was an active member of Duke Memorial United Methodist Church for over 60 years.

She was predeceased in 1998 by her husband of over 50 years, Zachariah William Lyon. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Lyon Parks and husband, Phil; her son, Frank Fuller Lyon, II; and her grandchildren, Christopher Robert Chambers, Katharine Taylor Lyon, and Wesley Mitchell Lyon, all of whom she adored.

Interment will be private. A memorial visitation will be held at the Duke Memorial United Methodist Church parlor adjacent to Gregson Street on Saturday, September 26 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Linda Sue Matthews

DURHAM -- Ms. Linda Sue Matthews, age 60, formerly of Pinebluff, died Thursday at her residence in Durham.

Linda was born in Moore County to the late Wesley Curtis and Annie Laura Green Matthews. Ms Matthews was a registered nurse.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ives Memorial Baptist Church in Pinebluff with the Rev. Don Ballinger officiating with burial to follow in Pinebluff Cemetery.

Survivors include four sisters, Evelyn Matthews-Beck of Aberdeen, Edna Earl Matthews Russell of Pinebluff, Annie Margaret Matthews Clark of Pinebluff, and Olivia "Judy" Matthews Foutch of Durham; two brothers, Martin Dow Matthews of Wilmington, and Jerry Dwayne Matthews of Fayetteville. She was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Louise Matthews Schorr. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Verna McDonald Suitt McDermott

BURLINGTON -- Verna McDonald Suitt McDermott, age 84, died peacefully on August 26, 2009, at her home in Twin Lakes Retirement Center, in Burlington.

She was born September 22, 1924, in the Orange Grove Community, between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. The third child of William Iverson Suitt and Nancy McCauley Lloyd Suitt, she was one of four daughters. She grew up on a beautiful 500-acre dairy farm known during her childhood as 'the Suitt place'. Her parents sold the farm to the Nutter family in the 1960's; today it is widely known and loved today as Maple View Farm.

Ms. McDermott attended Chapel Hill High School and studied for two years at Women's College of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro during World War II. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1950, and her Master of Arts degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1983.

She worked as a guidance counselor at Ferndale Junior High School in High Point, until her retirement in the late 1989. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Burlington.

She is survived by her three daughters, Linda Lloyd McDermott of Los Angeles, Calif., Nancie Susan McDermott of Chapel Hill, and Susanne McDermott Settle, of Greensboro; and by her six grandchildren, Benjamin Alden McDermott Polk, Samuel Iverson McDermott Polk, Daniel Garrett McDermott Polk, Julia Rose McDermott Polk, Camellia Dao-Ling McDermott Lee, and Isabelle Dao-Ahn McDermott Lee; nephews, David Wellons and William Hall; great nephews, Thad Hall and Ryan Hall; nieces, Diana Wellons, Edna Jo Hall Gambling, and Mary Elizabeth Hall-Stanger; and grand-niece, Jada Hall-Stanger.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at Cane Creek Baptist Church, on Orange Grove Road near Dairyland Road intersection, between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough.

PITTSBORO -- Mrs. Ruby Lois Rives Bouldin, 85, died September 24, 2009.

James M. Sconiers

OXFORD -- Elder James M. Sconiers, 63, a resident of 5114 Misty Lane, died Sunday at his home.

He was a native of Geneva, Ala.

The Rev. Melvin Jackson will conduct funeral services Saturday at noon at Mitchiner's Grove Baptist Church, 32 Mitchiner Grove Road, Franklinton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by a wife, Anna Brown Schoniers; two sons, Eric Sconiers, Fuquay-Varina and Lance Sconiers, Oxford; two daughters, Shana Sconiers-Ray and Angelique Sconiers, both of Plainfield, N.J.; three brothers, Elder Embria Sconiers, Matawan, N.J., John Sconiers, Hillside, N.J. and Randolph Sconiers, Twinsburg, Ohio; three sisters, Armie Perry, New Jersey City, N.J., Maxine White, Hillside, N.J. and Brenda Wilburn, Neptune, N.J.; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Friday from 7 until 8 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence of Eris Sconiers, 6018 Hope Ln., Fuquay-Varina.

Naomi Jones Hewett

CAROLINA SHORES -- Naomi Jones Hewett, 86, of Carrboro, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at Duke Hospice Hock Family Pavilion.

Naomi was born on May 1, 1923 in Brunswick County. She was the daughter of the late Gettie O. Jones and Frances Cox Jones. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde C. Hewett, to whom she was married for 50 years prior to his death in 1989. She was married to Jessie (Jack) Parker of Pittsboro until his death in 2005. Brothers preceding her in death are L.D. Jones, Edward O. Jones and G. Jarvis Jones of Oak Island. Infant deaths of a grandchild and great-grandchild precede her passing.

Naomi and her husband established Hewett's Ceramic Tile Company where she maintained the role of bookkeeper while raising a family. During this time she studied to become a nurse and worked at N.C. Memorial Hospital for several years until her retirement.

She is a member of the Hillsborough Church of God and enjoyed fellowship with her family and friends.

Surviving members of her family are her sons, C. Odell Hewett and his wife, Lois of Chapel Hill, Marvin G. Hewett and his wife, Barbara of Hillsborough, Kenneth R. Hewett and his wife, Lynn of Cary. Her daughters are Donna H. Squires and her husband, John of Chapel Hill and Diane H. Witham and her husband, George of Carrboro. Surviving siblings are George Ray Jones, Larry Jones, Jeanette Roach of Oak Island and Etta Mae Stanley of Shalotte. She has eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2009 by the Rev. Dale Morgan at Walker's Funeral Home Chapel in Chapel Hill. Internment services will follow at Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Percy T. Riley



HILLSBOROUGH -- Percy T. Riley, born August 31, 1918 in Hillsborough, and succumbed September 24, 2009 at the age of 91 years old.

He attended Hillsborough High School and was life-long member of Eno Methodist Church.

October 1, 1946, he married Helen L. Cox and was a devoted husband for what would be 63 years October 1, 2009. He was also a devoted father to his 3 children, Randy Riley, Russell Riley and Tracey Boley. He is survived by one sister, Ramona Overman; and one brother, James Riley; and six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Percy wore several hats over his working career and owned several businesses namely: Riley's Taxi Cab (slogan: 'Live and Let Live'), Riley Construction Company and Riley's Market.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Eno Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Hillsborough Town Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church.

Katherine Alma Kearney Freeman



FRANKLINTON -- Katherine Alma Kearney Freeman, 49, passed away Saturday September 19, 2009 at her residence.

Kathy's spirit is at rest in Heaven after battling cancer the past two and a half years.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and RN. She was a graduate of Franklinton High School and of Vance Granville Community College's associate degree RN nurse program.

She is survived by her husband, Albert Freeman; sons, Derrick and Nathan Freeman; parents, Henry Hal Kearney and Faye Ellington Kearney; sister, Alisa Medlin, wife of Tim Medlin, mother of Ethan Medlin; sister, Sharon Jones, wife of Mike Jones, mother of Bridgette Jones and Chloe Jones; grandmother, Pearl Ellington, all of Granville and Franklin county. All family resides in Granville and Franklin County.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, September 27, 2009 at 4 p.m. at Popes Chapel United Church of Christ, 1237 Pocomoke Rd. Franklinton.

Memorial contributions may be made to a Hospice of one's choice.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the memorial service.
