DURHAM -- In honor of October's Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Durham Crisis Response Center invites the local community to "Healing Through the Arts," a free series of events dedicated to domestic violence advocacy and prevention.

Durham Crisis Response Center is the sole provider of comprehensive shelter and support services in the Durham area, providing counseling, legal advocacy, support groups, and shelter to survivors and their families in the aftermath of domestic or sexual violence.

"'Healing Through the Arts' is a series of inspiring and informative presentations in recognition of those who have endured abuse or even death at the hands of an intimate partner," said Aurelia Sands Belle, DCRC executive director. "Through art, poetry, and a free educational workshop, we hope to shine a light on the subject of domestic violence, and to encourage survivors to find their own inspiration to heal."

The series begins with at the Durham Crisis Response Center facility at 206 N. Dillard St. at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 1.

Mayor Bill Bell, County Commissioners Chairman Michael Page and other local and state dignitaries will speak.

Details on other events, including an art show Oct. 7, a spoken word event on Oct. 16 and a workshop on safe relationships on Oct. 27 are available at www.durhamcrisisresponse.org.
