CHAPEL HILL -- Orange County's Animal Services Department is offering low cost rabies vaccination clinics the fourth week in September in celebration of the third annual World Rabies Day. The low-cost clinics ensure that cats and dogs are current on their vaccinations and provide pet owners with substantial savings on rabies vaccinations.

World Rabies Day is Sept. 28 and is an event sponsored by the Alliance for Rabies Control and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among other partner organizations. It is designed to raise global and local awareness about rabies and promote prevention efforts.

Orange County will offer two $5 (cash only) clinics the week leading up to World Rabies Day on the following dates:

n Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m., Government Services Center Annex, 208 South Cameron St., Hillsborough, 1-year and 3-year vaccinations will be given.

n Saturday, from 1 to 4 p.m., Orange County Animal Services Center, 1601 Eubanks Road, Chapel Hill, 1-year and 3-year vaccinations will be given.

Dogs must be on a leash and cats must be in a carrier. Fractious animals should remain in the car and the vet will vaccinate them there. Pet owners seeking 3-year vaccinations should bring the pet's most recent vaccination record. For questions, call 942-PETS (7387).
