Challenge readers know about the local alternative film scene, including Darlene Nicgorski in Chapel Hill who knew the answer to last week's Challenge, "What is Bruce Stone's connection to indie films in Chapel Hill?"

As Nicgorski replied, "Bruce Stone owned the Varsity and Chelsea Theaters in Chapel Hill, both independently owned and operated Chapel Hill movie houses [where] indie films could be seen. The Chelsea, which is an independent three screen cinema located at 1129 Weaver Dairy Road in the Timberlyne Shopping Center in the Northern section of Chapel Hill is still open and the Varsity, which has closed, was an icon of downtown Chapel Hill for years."

She added that "The Chelsea is the second independent art house cinema operating in the greater Chapel Hill area. It was originally a twin cinema when it opened in 1998, but somewhere in the late 1990s, a third screen was added. This was a cinema that showcased a lot of independent films as well as foreign released and first-run features. The Varsity was as unique as the Chelsea."

A pair of tickets to the Lumina Theaters is on the way to Nicgorski.

Now it's time to reveal next week's Challenge. Here's how it works. Every week we'll pose a trivia question that has something to do with our community or North Carolina. The question might be about something that happened 20 years ago or someone who made the news just yesterday.

If you think you know the answer, send e-mail to chquiz@aol.com, or mail it on a postcard to Chapel Hill Challenge, The Chapel Hill Herald, 106 Mallette St., Chapel Hill, NC 27516. You also can send us a fax at (919) 918-1055. Make sure you include your name, address and phone number. Answers must be received by Thursday of the same week. Employees of the Durham Herald Co. are not eligible for the Challenge.

Each week there will be a drawing from all the correct answers. The winner will receive a pair of movie passes donated by the Lumina Theater in Southern Village. (Note: Passes may not be valid for certain shows.)

Ready to give it a try? Then crank up your Google engine while pondering the following: "What health problem plagued King Tut, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan?"

Good luck!
