The Durham County Public Library's Durham Reads Together event is well underway.

"The mission of Durham Reads Together is to strengthen the community through a celebration of reading the same book," according to the library. "Durham Reads Together encourages people from all walks of life to read this year's book, and participate in programs and events."

This year's book is by Durham's Dr. Paul Austin, an emergency room doctor at Durham Regional Hospital. If you haven't already started "Something for the Pain," his account of an ER doctor's life, we thought we'd whet your appetite with the excerpt starting on this page, from Chapter One, "Night Shift."

Throughout October, the library will sponsor a series of discussions on the book. All Durham Reads Together 2009 programs are free and open to the public.

Copies of "Something for the Pain" are available for checkout at Durham County Library. For more information, contact Marian Fragola at 919-560-0268 or mfragola@durhamcountync.gov.
