Fridays on the Front Porch
Kick back, relax and get a jump-start on the weekend with live bluegrass music, a classic southern buffet or Tiny Vittles menu and full bar service. Fridays Uncorked
An Evening With Empire Distributors: Jean-Luc Colombo, one of the new stars of the Rhone Valley, uses modern techniques but they are still steeped in tradition to produce inexpensive Cotes du Rhones and fantastic cuvees from Cornas. Planetarium Laser Shows
Morehead Planetarium and Science Center hosts five amazing laser shows on Friday and Saturday nights this fall.
n Laser Classic Rock, 7 p.m.
n Laser U2, 8 p.m.
n Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, 9 p.m.
n Laser Zeppelin, 10 p.m.
n Pink Floyd's The Wall, 11 p.m.
Each show combines hit music with choreographed multicolor laser imagery for a sensory experience unlike any other!
Morehead will end its season of laser shows with a special Last Chance Laser Weekend, Nov. 21-22. During this weekend only, Morehead will replace its regular daytime planetarium shows with laser shows. This is the perfect opportunity for families and others who might prefer daytime shows to enjoy a laser show experience at Morehead.

'Summer and Smoke'
Deep Dish puts on Tennessee Williams' delicate drama of romantic yearning. The story follows a soulful young woman and a haunted, hard-living doctor. The performance is directed by Tony Lea. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays.

PlayMakers Presents Monologist
"The Last Cargo Cult," performed by mesmerizing storyteller Mike Daisey, tells the astonishing true story of a cult religion created by remote South Pacific islanders living on abandoned World War II military bases.

John Jorgenson Quintet
Guitarist John Jorgenson is a founding member of the Desert Rose Band, six-year member of Elton John's band and a pioneer of the gypsy jazz movement. He will perform at 8:30 p.m. today at the The ArtsCenter, 300-G East Main St., Carrboro.

Tailgate Party
The Carolina Inn Tailgate Party on the Front Porch starts at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The Inn offers its Southern Style Picnic menu with full bar service, and plenty of comfortable seating under the shady oaks and magnolias on the Inn's front lawn. Tony Williamson will perform live music. There is no cover charge.
Carrboro Market
The Seventh annual Chefs Who Shop the Carrboro Farmers' Market event takes place at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The local chef event is a celebration of local farms and locally owned restaurants. It features seven chefs as they create Blue Plate Specials using ingredients currently available at the farmers market. Shoppers can sample the dishes and take home recipes. Participating chefs include Kevin Callaghan, ACME; Bret Jennings, Elaine's on Franklin; Ricky Moore, Glasshalfull; Matt & Sheila Neal, Neal's Deli; Adam Rose, Il Palio; Bill Smith, Crook's Corner; and Amy Tornquist, Watt's Grocery.
The event lasts until the food runs out.
The market is at 201 W. Main St. in Carrboro. The event is free.
Puppet and costume workshop
Helen Buiskool and Jane Bergman will show you from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday how to make masks, costumes and puppets that you can parade down the street with in the Second Annual Hillsborough Handmade Parade.
This is a free workshop for parade participants, but enrollment is limited, so if you want be part of the fun please pre-register. You can come for just one Saturday or for all four Saturdays. Please indicate the days you choose on the registration form below.
This is for adults and children 8 years and older. (Those under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.)

The ArtsCenter invites interesting members of the community at 8 p.m. on Saturday to share personal narratives with an audience, from the comedic and absurd to the deeply painful and dramatic, it's just simple storytelling!

Monarch Magic
For ages 5 and up with a parent: It's that magical time of year! Monarch butterflies are in the midst of their incredible journey south to wintering grounds in Mexico.
Come explore from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday the amazing life of this colorful insect through hands-on activities in the garden, and learn how you can help monarchs in your own backyard by creating butterfly habitat. We'll even give you a special native plant to take home to get you started.

Tribute Marker
At the public unveiling from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday of a tribute marker at Peace and Justice Plaza, family members and others will speak of the nine peace and justice honorees.
A reception for the families and all others in attendance will follow at the home of Chris and Sharon Ringwalt, at 8 Cobb Terrace, Chapel Hill, N.C.
The header on the granite marker reads "Peace and Justice Plaza" and commemorates nine local activists: Charlotte Adams, Hank Anderson, James Brittian, Joe Herzenberg, Mildred Ringwalt, Hubert Robinson, Joe Straley, Lucy Straley, and Gloria Williams. The quote on the marker comes from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: "True peace is not merely the absence of some negative force, it is the presence of justice."

UNC music
As part of the William S. Newman Series Event, at 3 p.m. Sunday the Carolina Wind Quintet with Wonmin Kim, piano. Music by Glinka, Reinecke and Poulenc will be performed at Hill Hall Auditorium on the UNC campus. Call (919) 843-3333.
And then at 7:30 p.m., guest artists The Brad Linde Jazz Ensemble -- The Birth of the Cool at 60 and Lester Young's Centennial also will perform at Hill Hall.
