DURHAM -- Durham Mayor Bill Bell, Durham Convention & Visitors Bureau President and CEO Reyn Bowman and Downtown Durham, Inc. President Bill Kalkhof, will be honored Thursday for their efforts in revitalizing downtown Durham with a formal portrait to hang in the Durham Convention Center.
The portrait was commissioned by an anonymous donor.
Guest speakers at the 4:30 p.m. free, public event at the Convention Center, 201 Foster St., will include Jim Goodmon, president and CEO of Capitol Broadcasting Company; former mayor Nick Tennyson, executive vice president of the Home Builders Association of Durham, Orange & Chatham Counties, and former mayor Wib Gulley, general counsel of the Triangle Transit Authority.
Dick Brezinski, general manager of the Durham Marriott at the Convention Center, will serve as the master of ceremonies.
The portrait and plaque unveiling will be followed by refreshments provided by the Marriott.
INC to meet on Tuesday
DURHAM -- The InterNeighborhood Council will feature an update on the city's new recycling program at its monthly meeting on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Community Room at The Herald-Sun, 2828 Pickett Road.
Larrisha McGill, Waste Reduction Coordination for the city, will explain the program and answer questions from INC delegates and guests.
The InterNeighborhood Council is a community-wide coalition of Durham's neighborhood and homeowners associations. More information is available at www.durham-inc.org online.
Forte-Brown named to post
RALEIGH -- Gov. Beverly Perdue has appointed Durham Public Schools Board of Education Chairwoman Minnie Forte-Brown to the North Carolina Council for Women.
Forte-Brown is an instructor at N.C. Central University, a co-founder of the East Durham Children's Initiative and a member of the steering committee for the National School Board Association's Council of Urban Boards of Education.
The council advises the governor, the principal state departments and the state legislature concerning the education and employment of women in the state. The council consists of 20 members -- all appointed by the governor.
Recovery block party scheduled
DURHAM -- The Durham Center will team with Partnership for a Healthy Durham, Duke University Health System, Urban Ministries of Durham, El Centro Hispano, DurhamTRY and Freedom House Recovery Center, to hold its fourth annual Recovery Celebration Block Party on Sept. 25 as part of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
The block party will run from 4-7 p.m. at The Pavilion at Durham Central Park, home of the Durham Farmers Market, on Foster Street downtown.
The free, public event will include food, a variety of entertainment, information about substance use disorders and treatment options, and the inspiring stories of members of the local recovery community.
