BRIEFS
CHAPEL HILL -- Paintings by the Pastel Society of North Carolina will be returning this fall to the galleries of the Chapel Hill Museum, 10 years after their first exhibit was held here in 1999.
Opening Thursday, the exhibit will run through Nov. 1.
The Pastel Society has been active and exhibiting across the region since 1996. Its mission is to create works in soft pastels with the purpose of promoting standards of excellence and to encourage the use of this medium.
Ethical group changes name
CHAPEL HILL -- The N.C. Society for Ethical Culture, which meets at 1:30 on Sunday afternoons at Extraordinary Ventures, 200 South Elliot Road, has changed its name to Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle
The name change follows the lead of several other Ethical Culture Societies throughout the country to include "Humanist" in the name of their congregations. These congregations are the Ethical Humanist societies in Chicago, Philadelphia, Queens and on Long Island.
The Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle remains a member of the American Ethical Union, the national organization comprising Ethical Societies, Ethical Culture Societies and Ethical Humanist Societies, all of which are part of the historical Ethical Culture Movement founded in New York in 1876.
Chabad lists holiday services
The Jewish New Year is around the corner and Chabad of Durham/Chapel Hill serving Duke and UNC has announced its schedule for the High Holidays.
Like all of Chabad's programs, the services will be "warm, friendly and traditional" led by the Chabad's executive director, Rabbi Zalman Bluming.
On Friday, Rosh Hashanah will commence and continue through Sunday evening. Chabad will host a full High Holiday services schedule including prayer services and holiday meals. The services for Rosh Hashanah will take place in The Student and Academic Services Building, 450 Ridge Road, on the UNC South Campus, and the meals will follow shortly after.
Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, will begin the evening of Sept. 27, and continue through Sept. 28. Services for Yom Kippur will be held at The Carolina Inn, 211 Pittsboro St., Chapel Hill.
Unlike many congregations, membership is not required to join. All are welcome, regardless of background or affiliation.
For information, or if you have any questions related to the High Holidays, please call Rabbi Zalman Bluming at (919) 630-5129.
