DURHAM — New York Times columnist and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Nicholas Kristof will speak at Duke University about gender inequality in the developing world, the subject of his newly published book, “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.”
The talk by Kristof, the keynote speaker for Duke’s Jean Fox O’Barr Distinguished Speaker Series, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Page Auditorium.
The lecture is free and open to the public and will be followed by a book signing.
Entrepreneur course offered
DURHAM — Durham Technical Community College’s Small Business Center is again offering its popular course “The Fast Entrepreneur: Getting to Profitability in a Hurry.” The class is for existing business owners and fast-start new entrepreneurs who want to be successful and aspire to earn a six-figure net income within three years. Lessons cover the strategic steps required to make a business more profitable and writing a business plan.
The “Fast Entrepreneur” course will be held on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m., Sept. 23 through Dec. 9, at Durham Tech’s Corporate Education and Small Business Center. Duke hosts med conference
DURHAM — Duke University will host the Medical Innovation and Strategies Conference 2009 on Sept. 23 at The Fuqua School of Business, which will examine the future impact of wireless technology and other trends on the health care industry.

Forum to focus on climate
DURHAM — A free public forum organized by Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions will address what new federal climate and energy legislation could mean for North Carolina farmers and foresters.
The forum takes place Sept. 30 at the Sampson County Agri-Exposition Center in Clinton.
The daylong event is intended to give producers and landowners a chance to share their concerns and hear the latest analysis about climate and energy policies’ likely economic effects from scientists, policy experts, representatives from the N.C. Farm Bureau Federation and other key stakeholders.

NCCU kicks off Lunch and Learn
DURHAM — North Carolina Central University kicks off the first session of its Lunch and Learn Series at the James E. Shepard Memorial Library, room 140, today at noon.
Today’s speaker is Durham resident and author Michele Bowen. Bowen will read from her book, “Up at the College,” and will sign copies at the end of the session.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lunch. The staff will provide dessert.
