DURHAM Brian Francis Cuffe

DURHAM -- Brian Francis Cuffe, age 67, died Monday, September 7, 2009, at Duke Medical Center following a brief illness. Brian was born in Buffalo, NY on October 28, 1941 to the late Francis and Louise Frey Cuffe.

An avid skier, captain of the SUNY Buffalo ski team, and certified ski instructor, Brian also cherished gardening, travel, and most importantly his three grandchildren. He enjoyed a long career in regional retail management, most recently with Stein Mart stores. Brian was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill.

Brian is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sharon Cuffe of Durham; his sons: Michael Cuffe and wife, Rowena Dolor Cuffe, of Chapel Hill; Daniel Cuffe of Singapore; and his three grandchildren: Megan, Andrew and Evan Cuffe.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 17, 2009 from St. Thomas More Catholic Church with Father John Durbin, S.T.L., presiding.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Brian's memory may be made to the American Red Cross or to St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael St., Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

Ira Leon Hogan, Sr.

DURHAM -- Mr. Ira Leon Hogan, Sr., 71, of N. Roxboro Rd in Durham, past away at his home Sunday Morning. Mr. Hogan was born in Johnston Co, the son of the late Oscar Zachariah Hogan, and Pauline Tew Hogan. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jane Jones.

Mr. Hogan lived in Durham most of his life and retired as a Painter.

Mr. Hogan is survived by 3 sons, David E. Hogan of Durham, Leon Hogan of Franklinton, and Russell Hogan of Berea; a daughter, Caro Earp of Durham; former wife, Nancy Chisenhall McCoy of Berea; a brother, Roscoe Hogan of Durham; a sister Ora Mae Cribb of Burlington, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Clements Funeral Chapel Tuesday September 15, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Johnny Godair officiating. The family will receive friends at Clements Funeral Home Monday September 14 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Dr. Joseph Donell Gatewood

HILLSBOROUGH -- Dr. Joseph Donell Gatewood, 62, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2009. Dr. Gatewood practiced dentistry for 40 years in Hillsborough, N.C. He had a special affinity of the dental care of the underprivileged, especially children including the Department of Health and Human Services for Children and Families and GlaxoSmithKline.

Dr. Gatewood was the son of Mrs. Bessie M. Gatewood and the late Haywood J. Gatewood of Wadesboro, N.C. He was married to Dr. Darlene Dixon of Hillsborough, N.C. and had two children of that union, Anna and Christopher Gatewood. He also has two children of his first marriage to Millie Keith Gatewood. Donna M. Gatewood of Hillsborough(and granddaughter Tyler) and Joseph Keith (Yusuf) Gatewood; two sisters, Olivia Gatewood (Hillsborough, N.C.) and Sophia Gatewood-Crawford (Rockingham, N.C.); two brothers, Lawrence Gatewood (Wadesboro, N.C.) and Dr. Algic Gatewood (Portland, Ore.); and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, September 15 at 12:30 p.m. at Lanisville Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1701 Jimmy Ed Road, Hurdle Mills, N.C. 27541. The burial service will be held at Westview Memorial Cemetery at 4:30 p.m. on September 15, 2009.

Wayne Hutchins



CHAPEL HILL -- Wayne Hutchins, age 81, died Saturday, September 12, 2009, in his Chapel Hill home surrounded by his loving family. Wayne was born on April 30, 1928 in Orange County to the late Clyde and Nellie Hutchins.

Wayne proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was in the 175th Military Police Battalion. He later retired from the UNC Electrical Distribution Dept. where he worked for 41 years.

Wayne will be remembered as a faithful and active Heritage member of Orange United Methodist Church. In 1965 he served on the church building committee when the first educational building was constructed. As chairman of the building committee in the early 1970s, Wayne drew the plans to build the church porch and the steeple that now sits atop the sanctuary. He served the church in other capacities as well: financial secretary, head usher and cemetery caretaker.

Wayne loved his church and his generosity was apparent when he donated the flagpole that stands in the church cemetery today in honor of the veterans buried there.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Patsy A. Hutchins of Chapel Hill, N.C.; four stepchildren: Ralph Powell, Sr. of Danville, Va.; Deborah Hite of Boydton, Va.; Sammy Knight of Durham, N.C.; Teresa Kubinsky of Chapel Hill; his sister, Mildred Williams of Chapel Hill; his nieces, Terri Jones of West End, N.C. and Debi Bryan of Germantown, Tenn.; his nephew, Randy Williams, Jr of Arnold, Md.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Julia Bass.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at Orange United Methodist Church with the Reverend Ken Hall presiding. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

Friends may visit with the family prior to the service in the church fellowship hall from 1 to 2 p.m.
