Man charged in hit-and-runs

DURHAM -- The driver of a car involved in two accidents Saturday evening on Interstate 40 and elsewhere in Durham has been charged with felonious hit-and-run and driving without a license. He was the only serious injury.

The first accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. Saturday when a 1995 Saturn was involved in a hit-and-run accident near the intersection of Holloway Street and Miami Boulevard. Half an hour later, the same Saturn was traveling east on Interstate 40 when it took the Page Road exit. The driver, Caesar Antonio Garcia Hernandez, 25, of LaSalle Street, then attempted to merge back onto the interstate, according to the Durham Police Department. Instead, he struck a large digital highway message sign.

Then the Saturn crossed the eastbound lanes of I-40 and struck a Chevrolet Impala in the far left lane, which came to rest against the median barriers. The Saturn also ended up against the barriers.

The drive of the Impala, Frank Lackey of Statesville, and his three passengers, were not injured.

Garcia Hernandez was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of serious head injuries. He was released Sunday morning and charged. The Saturn is owned by Manuel de Jesus Guillen Cruz, also of Durham. Both accidents are still under investigation.

Wasson allegedly told the child not to tell anyone else, slapped and shook the child, and did not report the crime to social services or the police. Wasson is held on $10,000 bond.
