DURHAM -- Anyone interested in learning about how to prevent domestic violence, sexual assault, and rape and how to help its victims is invited to the city's "Sex, Love and Violence" Summit from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Durham Marriott at the Convention Center, 201 Foster St.
The inaugural summit, hosted by the Mayor's Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Rape Task Force and the city's Department of Human Relations. The program and lunch are free, registration is required. Call (919) 560-4410, ext. 24255, to register.
Speakers will include Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell, Mayor Pro Tempore Cora Cole-McFadden, City Councilman Michael Woodard, Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez Sr., and representatives from the Durham County District Attorney's Office, North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Durham Crisis Response Center, North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and a survivor of sexual assault and rape.
The Durham Marriott is the sponsor of this event.
A second summit -- specifically designed for Latino residents and conducted in Spanish only - will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 810 W. Chapel Hill St. The program and refreshments are free. Registration, again, is required, and the number to call is the same as for the Sept. 16 event.
