CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina College Republicans have announced their intentions to continue their annual tradition of paying tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. With the assistance of Young America's Foundation (YAF), the College Republicans will construct a temporary memorial in Polk Place near South Building consisting of 2,977 American flags, each representing an innocent life tragically lost in the attacks. The memorial was to be constructed late Thursday night and until Friday evening.
Each year YAF helps students across the country properly remember the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks through their 9/11: Never Forget Project. YAF began this program in 2003 when it discovered that most college campuses were either completely ignoring the anniversary of the terrorist attacks or scheduling a "politically correct" activity instead.
Throughout the day today, the College Republicans also will be seeking donations of any amount from the campus community for the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund. This fund exists to provide educational scholarships for the children of American soldiers who have been killed or seriously wounded in battle. Through the generosity of thousands of donors, the Freedom Alliance has awarded more than $2.5 million in scholarships to the sons and daughters of American heroes.
"The College Republicans are proud to lead the effort in remembering those lost on that fateful day," said UNC College Republicans Chairman John Eick. "We call on the entire university community to support our efforts in honoring those who died innocently and those who have subsequently given their lives to protect our freedom."
