Artist Aldwyth to give Hanes lecture

CHAPEL HILL -- The artist Aldwyth, whose singular work is the subject of the exhibit now on view at the Ackland Art Museum, will deliver a free lecture Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Hanes Art Center Auditorium at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as part of the UNC Chapel Hill Art Department's Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture Series. The Ackland will open for special hours that day starting at 4 p.m. and host a public reception for the artist following the lecture.

The exhibit "Aldwyth: work v. / work n. - Collage and Assemblage 1991-2009" is on view at the Ackland Art Museum through September 13.

Organized by The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston, this exhibit is the first major retrospective ever of collage and assemblage artist Aldwyth, and made its premiere at the Ackland in May. This speaking engagement will be the first public presentation the artist has made since the exhibition opened.

An interview with Aldwyth can also be heard on WUNC FM's program "The State of Things" Tuesday, airing at noon and 9 p.m.

Durham Symphony announces auditions

DURHAM -- The Durham Symphony and Maestro William Henry Curry announce auditions for the following positions: violins, cello, and fourth horn (one-year position) and extras for all sections of the orchestra.

Auditions will take place Sept. 13 at the Durham Arts Council at 120 Morris St. from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Rehearsals take place on Tuesdays at 7:30 (starting Sept. 29) at the Durham Arts Council building in the IBM Rehearsal Hall (basement). The repertoire for the auditions will be taken from Dvorak's "New World Symphony," Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony" and sight reading. Candidates will also be expected to play a movement from a concerto or etude.

LGP to present 'The Italian Actress'

DURHAM -- Little Green Pig Theatrical Concern will present "The Italian Actress," by Jody McAuliffe, based on the novel by Frank Lentricchia.

In this play, a video artist attempts to make the ultimate transgressive artwork. This world premiere production is directed by Dana Marks.

Production runs Sept. 17-26. All shows are at 8:15 p.m. except Sept 20 at 3:15. Tickets are $17 Friday, Saturday and Sunday, $12 Wednesday and Thursday, with a $2 discount for seniors, students and military personnel.

Art guild accepting show submissions

DURHAM -- The Durham Art Guild is now accepting submissions for the upcoming 55th Annual Juried Art Show featuring Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons as juror. The prospectus for the Juried Art Show can be downloaded at www.durhamartguild.org.

Submissions (including jpeg images on PC compatible CDs, application and fee) must be hand-delivered or postmarked to the Durham Art Guild by Sept. 30. Please see prospectus for details.

During Campos-Pons' visit in early November, she will be giving two free lectures that are open to the public. One will be held in the PSI Theater at the Durham Arts Council Building at 120 Morris St., Nov. 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m, and another at Duke University, date, time and location to be determined.

Yas performance canceled

The Sept. 17 performance of Iranian hip-hop artist Yas at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been canceled.

Representatives of the artist said Yas will be unable to appear. The performance was to take place in Memorial Hall as part of the 2009-10 Carolina Performing Arts series.

Carolina Performing Arts will provide full refunds to patrons who had already purchased tickets to the performance. For information, call or visit the Memorial Hall Box Office, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 843-3333.

Y Laugh continues this weekend

CARRBORO -- For the eighth year, DSI Comedy Theater will be raising money for the Strong Kids Campaign scholarship fund at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA with the theater's mini festival, Y Laugh. The festival continues today and Saturday, and the proceeds from ticket sales at the theatre will be given to the YMCA.
