Audrey S. Abrams
DURHAM -- Mrs. Audrey S. Abrams, 86, passed away Friday, August 28 at Duke Hospice at the Meadowlands. Though living in Durham, the past three years to be close to her daughter, Mrs. Abrams lived and worked in Baltimore, Md. for 60 years.
Mrs. Abrams was born June 5, 1923 in County Durham, England and immigrated to Baltimore in 1946 to find a better life and more opportunities. Four days after her arrival, she began her career at McCormick & Company as a stenographer. She soon moved up in the ranks and received numerous awards for her work. In 1970, Mrs. Abrams was elected the company's first female officer in her position as assistant treasurer. She retired in 1983 and, with her husband Norman, traveled the United States in an RV for several years.
Audrey is preceded in death by her husband, Norman Charles Abrams and son, Wayne Charles Abrams. She is survived by her daughter, Gail Abrams and life partner, Jeanne Allen of Durham; her sister, Sheila Wilson and husband, Peter, of Stockton-on-Tees, England; her brother, Hughie Stobbs and wife, Renee, of Portsmouth, England; and extended family in England and Baltimore, Md.
Audrey loved to travel, spending her retirement years visiting numerous countries, meeting new friends and enjoying many adventures. Some of her travel destinations included her favorite destination of New Zealand, Iceland, Antarctica, Panama Canal, Croatia, Turkey, Hungary, Greece and her homeland of England. She kept her mind alert by completing the daily crossword puzzle in the local newspaper.
The family wishes to thank Audrey's oncologist, Dr. Secord and her staff and the staff and volunteers at the Duke Hospice at the Meadowlands for their loving care and support.

DURHAM -- Ms. Elizabeth Fay Davis, 32, of 2217 Shadow Valley Rd., #D, High Point, died Monday, August 31. Her funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2 at Burthey Funeral Chapel, 1510 Fayetteville St. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the chapel, one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Markham Memorial Garden.

Eunice Saunders Fogleman
ROUGEMONT -- Eunice Saunders Fogleman, age 64, of 1572 Glenn Fogleman Rd., died Monday, August 31, 2009 at the Hock Family Pavilion in Durham. She was born in Person County. She was daughter of the late James and Bessie Carver Saunders and wife of the late Gilbert Fogleman. Mrs. Fogleman was preceded in death by her brother, Gene Saunders. She was a member of the Mt. Harmony Baptist Church. Eunice was a former employee of Eaton Corporation with 35 years service.
Surviving are her daughter, Christie Fogleman Oakley and husband, Tommy; and her son, Timothy James Fogleman, all of Rougemont; one grandchild, Savannah Rae Oakley; two sisters, Mary Saunders Loftis and husband, Ralph, and Earline Johnson Saunders and husband, Ray, all of Roxboro.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2009 at the Mt. Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Barry Chambers officiating. Burial will be in the Person Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home, Inc. and other times at the home of her daughter, 1553 Glenn Fogleman Road, Rougemont.

John Garland Kelly
DURHAM -- John Garland Kelly, 92, a longtime resident of Angier Avenue, Durham, passed away Friday, August 28, at his son's home in Cherokee.
He retired from The American Tobacco Company where he was a head machinist.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret. Also, he had two brothers and a sister who passed away before him; and one surviving sister, Evelyn Davis of Durham.
He is survived by two sons, Malcolm "Mac" and fiancee, Kathy, of Cherokee, Raymond and wife, Jeama, of the Philippines; a daughter, Linda K. Bass of Durham.
Also, surviving are three grandsons, Jeffrey Kelly and wife, Dannette, of Hilliard, Ohio, Kent Jackson of Durham, and Justin Kelly of Wilmington.
Three great-grandchildren, Danielle, Clarence, and Jacylnn Kelly of Hilliard, Ohio also survive him.
The funeral service will be at Markham Cemetery on Farrington Road in Durham. It will take place on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Visitation will be one hour prior.
Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Kelly, Kent Jackson, Justin Kelly, Clarence Kelly, Luther Jackson, and Patrick Friedhoff.

DURHAM -- Funeral services for Mary Lee Vanhook Riley will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 1 p.m. from Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 8021 Stagville Road Bahama. Samuel D. Self
DURHAM -- Mr. Samuel D. Self, son of the late Rosa and Jasper Self was born in Hemingway, S.C., August 31, 1921. He died at Duke University Medical Center on August 27, 2009.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Holloway Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service at 1 p.m.
He leaves to cherish his memories one son, Daniel Self; one brother, Jonathan Self (Eunice); three nieces, Cynthia Wilkins (William), Angela Self and Kenyatta (Aaron) Allen; one nephew, Jonathan Self (Kathy); and a host of nieces and nephews relatives and friends.

Harold J. Tapp
MEBANE -- Mr. Harold J. Tapp, 71, of 6907 Corbett Ridge Rd., died Sunday evening at his home. Mr. Tapp was born in Wake Co., the son of the late Allen Roger Tapp and the late Mana Thompson Tapp. Prior to his retirement he was employed by Daniels. Mr. Tapp was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Tapp; sister, Ann Tapp Gibson Tesh; brother, Roger Lawrence Tapp; and grandson, Robert Connolly.
Mr. Tapp is survived by his girlfriend, Julia Baker of Mebane; daughters, Christy McDonald (Bob) of Show Low, Ariz., Sherry Buchanan (Waldo) and Lorrie Powell (Melvin), both of Durham; son, Allen Tapp of Carrboro; sisters, Veralee Medlin of Bahama, Jennie Falls of Timberlake and Virginia May of Durham; brother, Louis Tapp of Roxboro; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Riverside Baptist Church with Pastor Jimmy Jones officiating. Gwendolyn Blackwell Winston
BULLOCK -- Mrs. Gwendolyn Blackwell Winston, age 75, died Sunday, August 30, 2009. A native of Granville County, she was the daughter of the late Dorsey and Tazzie Frazier Blackwell. Mrs. Winston was owner and chairman of Winston International in Oxford. She was also a member of Grassy Creek Baptist Church and a member of National Business Women of America.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 11 a.m. from Grassy Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnny Armstrong. Burial will follow in the Grassy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Bullock.
Surviving is her husband of 56 years, James Pratt Winston; one daughter, Kathryn Winston and husband, John Richardson of Henderson; three sons, Jim Winston and wife, Anne, and John Lee Winston and wife, Anna, both of Oxford, Francis Winston and wife, Tammy of Bullock; one brother, A.D. Blackwell of Oxford; and three sisters, Jane Holdon of Knightdale, Yvonne Weeks of Oxford and Betty Pegram of Bullock; 12 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a sister, Adelle Bentley.

ROXBORO -- Virginia Moore Frederick, age 90, formerly of Route 3, Roxboro, died Monday, August 31, 2009 at Person Memorial Hospital. She was born in Person County and was the daughter of the late James Moore and Annie Rogers Moore. She was widow of the late Marshall O. Frederick. She was preceded in death by a son, Merle Frederick, her siblings, Bruce Moore, Raymond Moore, Malcolm Moore, and Jamie Moore. She was a member of Brooksdale United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her children and their spouses, John Mark Frederick and wife, Debbie, of Leland, Carol F. Monk and husband, Tommy, of Roxboro, Jan F. Wooten and husband, Andy, of Roxboro; four grandchildren, Stefan Frederick, Tammy Cozart, Christy Godkin, Traci Wooten; four great-grandchildren, Sarah Godkin, Laura Godkin, William Godkin, and Nicole Cozart.

GREENSBORO -- Mr. D. Thomas 'Tom' Berry Jr., 48, died Sunday, August 30, 2009 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Lawndale Baptist Church, where he was a member, with Dr. Joe Giaritelli officiating. Interment will follow in Westminster Gardens.
Tom was born on September 6, 1960, in Durham. He graduated from Northern Durham High School in 1978 and UNC-Chapel Hill School of Journalism in 1982. He was employed with the High Point Enterprise as a sportswriter. He won several N.C. press awards during his career. A resident of Greensboro for 22 years, he was a member of the Tweeners Life Journey Group and coached Upward Basketball at Lawndale Baptist Church.
Though he covered sports at the college and professional levels, Tom's favorite events to watch were those in which his three daughters played.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Stone Berry of the home; three daughters, Ashlyn, Rachel and Leah Berry; father and stepmother, Delma and Jean Berry of Durham; mother and stepfather, Virgilene and Ronald Poplin of Durham; two brothers, Greg Berry and wife, Gina, of Greensboro and Alan Berry of Hillsborough; a sister, Debbie B. Corr and husband, Don, of Fuquay Varina; a stepsister, Janice Korzendorfer and husband, Dan, of Newport.

Harold Jack Smith Sr.
CLARKSVILLE, VA. -- Harold Jack Smith Sr., 84, widower of Annis Miller Smith, died Sunday morning in the Veterans Administration Regional Hospital in Durham. Mr. Smith was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army. He was retired from Durham Life Insurance Company and he was a member of Marrows Chapel United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Marrows Chapel United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Reverends Chad Holtz and John Yount. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
