Fundraiser set for the DBAP

DURHAM -- Community in Schools of Durham is holding a fundraiser at Durham Bulls Athletic Park at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday when the Durham Bulls host the Gwinnett Braves.

The fundraiser is being supported by Whole Foods and the Durham Bulls.

One dollar from every ticket sold Sept. 1 will be donated to CIS Durham Support CIS. Standard price for two tickets for the Sept. 1 game is $9.

Durham's Tyndall hits the lottery

RALEIGH -- Alan Tyndall of Durham has won big on a North Carolina Education Lottery "Carolina Cash 5."

He purchased a ticket for the Aug. 25 drawing from Tops Shell Mart on Farrington Road in Chapel Hill, and his ticket matched all five numbers drawn to win the $318,762 top prize ($216,608.50 after taxes).

Tyndall says he doesn't have many plans for his winnings, but that he and his family will go out for "a really good dinner" with some of the money.

Billboard ads are donated

DURHAM -- Fairway Outdoor Advertising has donated an advertising package worth $5,000 to the Bull Durham Blues Festival, an event presented by the Hayti Heritage Center.

A series of billboards will be displayed in Durham for approximately a month prior to the festival. The announcement was made today by Paul Hickman, general manager of Fairway.

The donated billboards are being used to increase awareness and promote the September festival. The 22nd annual Durham Blues Festival will feature two days of music and include Grammy Award winning artist Eric Bibb.

'Save the Bronto' t-shirts on sale

DURHAM -- "Save the Brontosaurus" t-shirts to benefit the restoration of the Life and Science Museum's vandalized brontosaur statue will be on sale Saturday from 8 a.m.-noon at the Durham Farmers' Market at the Pavilion at Durham Central Park, 501 Foster St.

Northgate Park Bronto Committee volunteers have sold over 700 t-shirts already, raising money to pay for the repair of the head and major body damage. The committee is now seeking to address the peeling, flaking and painting of the statue's body and installing a new fence.

Tax official is promoted

DURHAM -- Tax Administrator Kimberly Simpson announced this week that Appraisal Division Manager, Teresa Hairston has been promoted to Deputy Tax Administrator.

"Teresa has been a key part of the success of Durham County's Office of Tax Administration and we are pleased that she will fill this important position" said Simpson.

Teresa Hairston joined the Durham County Tax Administration Office in 1993 as a data entry specialist.
