Saturday, the Ackland Museum of Art at UNC will open a new exhibit, "Almost Now: Cuban Art, Cinema, and Politics in the 1960s and 1970s." This exhibit, which continues through Dec. 6, looks at 16 Cuban cinema posters. For information, call 966-5736. The Ackland is at 101 S. Columbia St. in Chapel Hill.
Here is a brief roundup of other exhibits opening in the fall.
n "Andy Warhol Polaroids," Nov. 12-Feb. 21, 2010, Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. This exhibit will features about 300 Polaroid portraits and 100 gelatin silver black-and-white prints that Andy Warhol took from 1969 to 1986. Many are on view for the first time. This exhibit is a partnership between the Nasher and the Ackland Museum of Art at UNC. The show will travel to the Ackland.
n "The Guardian and the Avant-Garde: Seymour Lipton's Sentinel II in Context," Oct. 3-Jan. 3, 2010, Ackland Art Museum at UNC. Sculptor Seymour Lipton's sculpture "Sentinel II," which the Ackland acquired, will be the focal point for an exhibit of numerous avant-garde sculpture and works in other media drawn from the Ackland collection. This show features sculpture by artists Renee Stout, Albrecht Durer and others, and photographers Alfred Steiglitz, Gertrude Kasebier and others.
n Alumni exhibit, North Carolina Central University Art Museum, beginning Oct. 30. A highlight of this exhibit will be paintings by the late Ernie Barnes, a Durham native and NCCU alumnus.
n "Deep Sleep: New Paintings by Maria Britton," "Nourishment: Sustaining the Body and Soul, mixed media by Lori Easterlin," and "Out of the Blue: Mixed media by Joyce Watkins King," Nov. 6-Jan. 10, 2010, Durham Arts Council.
n "Durham Art Guild 55th Annual Juried Show," Nov. 20-Jan. 22, 2010, Durham Art Guild.
n The Durham Arts Council also sponsors two events that showcase visual arts. CenterFest will be held Sept. 19 and 20 in Durham Central Park. The Durham Art Walk will be held Nov. 21 and 22 at participating venues and locations downtown.
