ENTERTAINMENT BRIEFS
DURHAM --The roots rock of Sea Cow will be heard at the next edition of the Locally Grown Music series. Sea Cow will perform Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Pavilion in Durham Central Park on Foster Street.
The concert overlaps with the Durham Farmer's Market which runs from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday afternoon, May through September.
Sea Cow is a five-piece band based in Durham. The band's first CD, "The Vast Uncharted," was recorded by Stratocruiser's Mike Nicholson and features a performance by Tres Chicas and ex-Whiskeytown fiddler Caitlin Cary. Band members include, Jody "Forever Shoney" Maxwell, DJ James, Misha Angrist, Jennie Peters, Andrew Snee.
Locally Grown Music is looking for new sponsors for future concerts in September and October. For more info visit www.durhamcentralpark.org.
Superchunk to play 'Fences' benefit
DURHAM -- The Coalition to Unchain Dogs will present Music for Fences, a benefit for the organization, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Durham Central Park, on Foster Street. Performers will be local bands Superchunk, Regina Hexaphone, The Kinksmen and Rey Norteno.
Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the gate. All proceeds go toward building fences for dogs. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome. For information, visit www.musicforfences.org.
Midtown Dickens to release 'Lanterns' CD
DURHAM -- Midtown Dickens will celebrate the release of their new CD "Lanterns" in a 9 p.m. show today at Duke Coffee House. Des Ark and Mount Moriah also will perform as part of this set.
"Lanterns" is self-released in a multimedia package containing a vinyl record, CD, MP3 download code and a 16-page collage and lyric booklet with a full panel dedicated to each song on the record.
Admission is free. The coffee house is in Crowell Hall, 106 Epworth Lane.
Ingbretsen to sing at Last Friday concert
HILLSBOROUGH -- The August edition of Last Fridays continues today, with a performance from the vocal jazz group The Carol Ingbretsen Quartet. A native of Raleigh, Ingbretsen graduated from Broughton High School and attended East Carolina University, where she received a music degree in 1989.
These days, she focuses primarily on jazz and classical music. Her husband Paul often accompanies her on acoustic bass or guitar.
The band will perform on the north lawn of the Old Courthouse.
On the south lawn of the courthouse the Hillsborough Arts Council will be holding a make-and-take puppet workshop for kids (painting will be involved so bring an old T-shirt). This is one in a series of workshops leading up to the second annual Hillsborough Handmade Parade which will take place Oct. 17.
