ORANGE BRIEFS
CARRBORO — The American Red Cross, Anna Maria’s, Whole Foods Market-Chapel Hill and OWASA will co-sponsor a blood drive on from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today in the Community Room at the OWASA Administration Building, 400 Jones Ferry Road.
“The current blood supply has dropped critically low throughout the Southeast. Donors of all blood types are welcome, but there is an urgent need for type O negative, B negative and A negative blood donors,” said Caroline Z. Allison, donor recruitment representative with the American Red Cross, Carolinas Blood Services Region.
Anna Maria’s, Whole Foods Market-Chapel Hill and OWASA will provide food for the blood drive. Donors will be eligible to win a $1,000 gas card.
To participate in a blood drive, donors must be at least 17 years old or 16 with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health and have positive identification.
Walk-ins are welcome after noon. Information is also available from the American Red Cross at 1-800-GIVE LIFE.
‘Cell Phones for Soldiers’ sought
CHAPEL HILL — The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 9100 and Cell Phones for Soldiers are calling on Americans to support the troops by donating their unused cell phones. Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect more than 50,000 cell phones this year to help keep troops connected with their families.
“We’re proud to show our support for U.S. soldiers and to contribute to a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soldiers,” said Virginia Neville, president of the Ladies Auxiliary. Representatives from the Auxiliary will be at the American Legion Post 6, located on Legion Road in Chapel Hill, from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 12, to collect and package donated phones.
