Wilma Juanita Lambert Holmes
DURHAM -- After living a life of service, giving, and loving others, Wilma Juanita Lambert Holmes was called by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 16, 2009. Wilma was born June 27, 1924 in Goldston, where she grew up happy and content. She was the 12th child of Walter and Virginia Lambert. Wilma attended Goldston Academy and Goldston High School, graduating in 1942.
She enrolled at Johnson C. Smith University in the fall of 1942, graduating cum laude in Mathematics and Science in the spring of 1946. After graduation, Wilma taught mathematics for two years in Ocala, Florida. She then moved to New York City where she taught at Humbult Junior High School and Eleanor Roosevelt Junior High School. Wilma later worked in the New York Public Library and attended New York University where she received a master's degree in Science Education in 1954. She continued her education at Columbia University receiving a master's degree in Library Science in 1957. Her motto for education was 'A good mind possesses a kingdom.' Wilma was a dedicated master teacher who believed in motivating students to learn.
While living in New York, Wilma promoted Johnson C. Smith University in many capacities, in particular, revitalizing the New York Chapter, and serving as president in the late 1950's and early 1960's. When she relocated to North Carolina, she became a faithful and active member of Johnson C. Smith University's Raleigh-Durham Chapter for 25 years and served as recording secretary. In 1991, along with a few alumni, Wilma initiated the Durham Area Chapter and served as president until the spring of 2004. Wilma was an advocate for JCSU so long that some people called her Miss JCSU. Wilma loved blue and gold so much that her wardrobe was mainly - - you guessed it, blue and gold. After serving her tenure as president of the Durham Area Chapter, she wore the badge of president emeritus.
Wilma was initiated into the Gamma Delta Chapter of Johnson C. Smith University in 1944 in Charlotte. Following 50 years of faithful service to her beloved sorority, Wilma was honored as a Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Wilma was a member of Alpha Zeta Omega graduate chapter and a Boule member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Wilma was blessed with a gift of writing poetry, tributes, and history of her sisters, brothers, and other people in her life. Her desire was to have them published so they would be passed on through the years. Her poems have been featured in Treasured American Poetry.
Wilma was a former member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where her children were given the foundation of Christian principles at an early age. Wilma was a current member of Mt. Level Missionary Baptist Church where she was active in the Missionary Circle, Sunday school, and the Senior Citizens' Group. She was a missionary throughout Durham, visiting the sick and elderly, providing them with assistance, company, prayer and food.
An active citizen and community activist, Wilma proudly served the Missionary Circle and Acolyte Trainer at Covenant Presbyterian Church, the N.C. Retired Teachers Association, having taught math and science at Hillside and Durham High Schools in the Durham until her retirement in 1987, the Durham NAACP, the Women's Prison Ministry of Mt.
