CARRBORO -- John Herrera, a member of the Carrboro Board of Aldermen, submitted his resignation Thursday because he is moving out of town.
"It is with mixed feelings that I am writing this short note to notify you that I am submitting my resignation to the Board of Alderman of Carrboro due to my new change of residence outside of the city limits," Herrera wrote. "I just bought a house in Holly Springs, NC and I am in the process of moving."
Herrera already had announced he was not going to run again for the Board of Aldermen in November because he had recently married and wanted to spend more time with his new wife and family.
Sarah Williamson, the town clerk, sent out a notice that Herrera's resignation was effective immediately and that the Board of Aldermen has not yet decided how to fill the vacancy.
"The Board of Aldermen is currently on its summer break and has not yet discussed how to address this vacancy," Williamson said.
His resignation could affect the November election if the board decides to select one of the candidates to fill Herrera's place.
Five people, including two incumbents, are running for three open seats on the board.
They include incumbents Jacquelyn Gist and Randee Haven-O'Donnell, Sammy Slade, Sharon Cook and Tim Peck.
Herrera endorsed Slade.
In his resignation letter, Herrera said he appreciated the community diversity and progressive community vales that Carrboro has.
"It is what makes us unique from most towns in North Carolina and in the United States," he wrote.
"I am very proud and grateful for the opportunity that Carrboro granted me to be a public servant," he wrote. "I will continue following the new developments of Carrboro and will continue to pray that the Creator always grant you wisdom and knowledge to continue to lead and serve this great community of Carrboro."
