DURHAM -- Christian band MyCalvary will perform Sunday at the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church Back to School Bash.
Rose of Sharon, 4109 Guess Road, will host the bash from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday featuring food, inflatable games and door prizes.

Rev. Banks back at Evergreen UMC
CHAPEL HILL -- The Rev. Donna Banks is the new pastor of Evergreen United Methodist Church, 11098 U.S. 15-501, in northern Chatham County.
Banks previously served at Evergreen as a intern while attending Duke Divinity School, and became a member of the church in 2005. For the past three years, she has served as associated pastor at Christ United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill. She was ordained as an elder in the United Methodist Church in June. Evergreen worships at 10 a.m. Sunday, then resumes its regular schedule Aug. 30 with Sunday services at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. For information, visit www.evergreen-umc.org.
Teen serving at LDS mission in San Diego
DURHAM -- Ben Lewis, 19, of Durham, left for San Diego on Aug. 12 to serve at a Spanish-speaking mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
A member of the Chapel Hill Second Ward of the LDS Church, Ben is the son of Cynthia and William Lewis, also of Durham.
Lewis is a photography major at Brigham Young University-Idaho. He'll focus on the gospel for his mission trip and wants to set a good example, serve the people around him and teach them what he believes.
Duke's Chapel UMC hosting barbecue
DURHAM -- Duke's Chapel United Methodist Church, 807 Old Oxford Highway, will host a takeout barbecue chicken dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 29 at $6 per plate. There will be door prizes.

New Hope Union to meet at First Baptist
CHAPEL HILL -- The New Hope Union of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Association will meet Aug. 29 beginning at 9 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 102 N. Roberson St.
The Rev. B. Angeloe Burch Sr., associate minister at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Apex, will preach at 9:30 a.m. Minister Kia Roshea Hood, associate minister at Union Baptist in Winston-Salem, will present a youth lecture at 10:20 a.m. The Rev. Benjamin Hinton of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Gastonia, will present a lecture for adults at 10:20 a.m. The Rev. James Woodson of St. James Home of Fresh Start Ministries, Greensboro, will give a sermon at 12:10 p.m., followed by the Rev. Ronnie Johnson, Union president, the Rev. Dr. Junious Jones, Union vice president, and the Rev. Lafayette Maxwell, Union dean.
