DURHAM – Durham-based Cree Inc., a maker of LED lighting products, announced Monday that it’s participating in a series of energy efficiency renovations in U.S. diplomatic offices or residences in Vienna, Rome, Berlin, Madrid and Lisbon.

The company is installing energy efficient interior and exterior LED lighting as part of a program led by the nonprofit Alliance to Save Energy and The League of Green Embassies, a U.S. Department of state energy efficiency and clean technology promotion initiative, according to the announcement.

There are LED lighting products being installed at each residence according to its “unique needs,” the announcement states.

LED lighting will replace lighting in security fixtures, indoors, as well as in walkway lights, as well as in parking and roadway lighting, according to the announcement.

“Embassies are a great vehicle to showcase U.S. innovation and influence global commercial and industrial organizations to take action, consume less energy and advance energy efficiency,” Greg Merritt, vice president for corporate marketing for Cree, said in a statement.

In November, the Alliance to Save Energy announced that a total of 10 companies, including Cree, were working with the league to provide energy-efficient equipment for 11 different U.S. diplomatic offices and residents in Europe.

The U.S. Department of State provided $500,000 to defray some of the costs, the release states.

Cree wasn’t disclosing the revenue or costs of the League of Green Embassies project, a spokesman for the company said in an email Monday.
