DURHAM -- Preservation Durham has recognized historic preservation and neighborhood conservation this week with 13 awards.
It recognized Benjamin Speller, former Preservation Durham president and retired dean of The School of Library and Information Sciences at N.C. Central University, with its premier Bartlett Durham Award.
The award, last presented in 2007, is bestowed to those who have shown "outstanding leadership and sustained involvement in historic preservation in Durham County."
George and Mary Pyne Preservation Awards reward sensitive restoration projects that honor and preserve Durham's unique architectural heritage.
Neighborhood Conservation Awards recognize individual projects that advance the preservation of historic neighborhoods.
The group also presented two Advocacy Awards, new this year.

n 402 Oakwood Ave., c. 2009. Charles D. Davis and John W. Seal III, owners.
n 102 S. Driver St., c. 1913. Tiffany Elder, owner/contractor; Izzaldin Mateen, carpenter; Melanie Gartrell, design consultant.
n 605 Carlton Ave., Conklin-Wheeler House, c. 1907. Maureen Kurtz, owner; Jason Tremon, Cedar Creek Building Co., contractor; John Duncan, Triangle Construction Management Co., project manager; Mariana Byrd, Urban Durham Realty, Realtor.
Advocacy Awards were given to George Smart, founder and director of Triangle Modernist Homes, and Gary Kueber, who originated and maintains the Endangered Durham blog and is the COO of Scientific Properties Inc.
The awards were presented at Pop's Restaurant.
