Duke, UNC grad schools rank high in U.S.

DURHAM -- The graduate and professional schools at Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill continue to be highly rated by U.S. News & World Report.

The magazine's newest rankings, released Tuesday, list Duke's medical school tied for fifth for research, up from a tie for sixth last year and the nursing school tied for seventh, its highest ranking ever.

The Duke law school remained 11th and the Fuqua School of Business rose two places to 12th.

For the second consecutive year, the university's Pratt School of Engineering rose two places in the rankings, to end up in a tie for 31st.

Duke medicine was recognized in geriatrics (fourth), internal medicine (fourth), women's health (fifth), AIDS (eighth) and family medicine (10th). It tied for 41st in primary care.           

Duke's physician assistant program was rated first. The School of Nursing's pediatric nurse practitioner program was rated fifth, its adult nurse practitioner and gerontological nurse practitioner programs were each ranked 10th, and its nursing-anesthesia program was tied for 11th.

Within the business school ratings, Duke was ranked third in marketing, fourth for executive MBA program, fourth in international (up from a tie for sixth last year), ninth in management and 12th in finance.

Within engineering, Duke ranked fourth for biomedical and bioengineering, 21st for environment/environmental health, 24th for mechanical engineering, 28th for computer engineering and 31st for electrical/electronic communications.

Within the law school rankings, Duke was rated 11th for intellectual property law.

The magazine ranked UNC's Gillings School of Global Public Health second for its master's and doctorate degree programs and the Kenan-Flagler Business School 19th for its master of business administration degree programs.

Carolina's School of Education tied for 29th and its School of Law was tied for 30th nationally.  

UNC also was ranked third in health-care management, third for its master's degree program at the school of public health and tied for 11th in environmental/environmental health.

The School of Medicine's primary care specialty was rated second and research came in 20th.  Family medicine tied for second, rural medicine was sixth and AIDS, 10th.    The master's program at the School of Nursing tied for fourth and the school of public health tied for 11th

In the nursing school, psychiatric/mental health tied for fourth, pediatric was 10th and nursing service administration was sixth.

The accounting program at  the business school was rated the 10th best and the executive MBA was also 10th.
