Despite drops, Northwood stays unbeaten

Visiting Pittsboro Northwood got off the bus and started scoring, piling up points until the final score was 22-6 in a win against Jordan-Matthews on Friday.

Northwood quarterback Ti Pinnix didn’t throw for another 500 yards and five touchdowns like he did in Week 2, instead having to settle for a more modest night that included a touchdown pass to go with some help from the Chargers’ special teams.

“We weren’t clicking on all cylinders tonight,” Northwood coach Bill Hall said. “We had way too many dropped passes.”

The Chargers went unconventional with an onside kick to start the game and recovered on the Jordan-Matthews 39, leading to a 5-yard touchdown when Pinnix dumped a pass to Kadarus Rone, who had leaked out of the backfield.

The Chargers got another atypical score by tackling Jets running back Tré Jones in the end zone for a first-quarter safety.

Jordan-Matthews got on the scoreboard when quarterback Josh Hudson made good on a fourth-down gamble with a touchdown pass covering 33 yards to Cyrus Scotton.

Northwood blocked the extra-point attempt.

In the third quarter, Rone ripped off 46 yards of real estate, setting up his 3-yard score, only to be outdone by teammate Jalen Smith’s 37-yard touchdown on a punt return.

The Chargers’ offense looked a lot like East Chapel Hill’s a year ago when Northwood offensive coordinator Bill Renner was head coach of the Wildcats, except Northwood (3-0) has a better running back in Rone.

The Jets (2-1) early on did a good job of bottling up Rone, Hall said.

“Their defense always plays tough, and we knew coming in tonight it was going to be a dogfight,” Hall said.
