Coppin State douses NCCU women's comeback try

A furious rally by N.C. Central fell short in a 67-58 loss to Coppin State at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium Saturday.

A couple of 3-pointers late in the second half by Jessica Freeman (18 points) gave NCCU hope down the stretch, but it wasn’t enough, she said.

NCCU’s Khyra Conerly (12 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists) said there was too much pressure on Freeman to make dramatic 3s toward the end of the game, and that can’t continue.

Both teams had three players score in double figures. In fact, NCCU’s main scorers accounted for 45 points, while Coppin State’s put up 43.

Coppin State got a double-double (18 points, 14 rebounds) from Larissa Carter.

Racquel Davis (15 points, 11 rebounds) had a double-double for NCCU. Prior opponents have been double-teaming Davis, but Coppin State chose not to do that.

One big difference in the game was turnovers, or, more importantly, what happened once the ball was turned over.

While NCCU committed just one more turnover (22-21) than Coppin State, Coppin scored 25 points off those turnovers, compared to NCCU’s 16.

Missed free throws hurt NCCU, too. NCCU left eight points at the charity stripe, going 24 of 32 from the foul line. Coppin State was 16 of 18 from the free-throw line.

“We always talk about how valuable free throws are,” NCCU coach Vanessa Taylor said.

NCCU returned two players from last season’s team, so it’s taking time to get everybody on the same page on the court, Taylor said. They’re getting there, though, she said.

“They did play at times at a very high level of energy. We’ve just got to maintain that spark throughout,” Taylor said.

“We’re tired of fighting back all the time,” Freeman said. “It’s time for us to start being on top and let the other team fight back. We have to reverse that.”
