Bulls tomahawk Indians

INDIANAPOLIS — Mikie Mahtook homered and drove in five runs, while Mike Montgomery became just the fourth eight-game winner in the league as Durham bombed Indianapolis 9-2 on Saturday night.

The Bulls (42-29) chased Indians (40-29) starter Jay Jackson before the first inning ended. Durham sent 10 to the plate, scoring five times. Robby Price and Hak-Ju Lee delivered RBI hits with two outs to open one of the Bulls' biggest offensive nights of the year.

Mahtook took over from there. After receiving an RBI on an error in the first inning by Jackson, who fumbled a tapper with the bases loaded to bring a run home, Mahtook doubled home Cole Figueroa in the fourth, then connected for a three-run shot onto the street behind the left field grass seating to cap a huge night.

Montgomery (W, 8-1) worked five innings, allowing just a two-run double in the third. Montgomery fanned seven, walked one en route to his fifth win in his last seven starts.

The Bulls knocked out 13 hits, their most in June, to split the four-game set with Indianapolis after dropping the opening two games.

With the victory, the Bulls opened up a season-high 6 1/2 game lead in the South over Gwinnett, which lost at Louisville on Saturday night.

The Bulls, now 4-2 on their current 10-game road trip, will be in Louisville tonight with Alex Colome (2-0, 0.44) starting opposite right-hander Brett Marshall (0-1, 4.91). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
